C'Est La Vie album
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that ...

| | Richard Harris Macarthur Park CD (1997)
C'Est La Vie songs
$11.19 MACARTHUR PARK goes beyond the famous hit title track to explore the recorded work of stage and screen actor Richard Harris, including his versions of "Paper Chase" and "Name Of My Sorrow."
This CD reissue from England is almost (but not quite) identical to Raven Records' Richard Harris: The Webb Sessions 1968-69 from Australia, combining the contents of the albums A Tramp Shining and The Yard Went on Forever. The difference is the absence of the last Richard Harris-Jimmy Webb collaboration, "One of the Nicer Things," which appeared as a free-standing single in 1969. Alan Hodgson's annotation is slightly less informative than the notes by Jimmy Webb on the Raven CD. On the other hand, this disc is also about $3-$5 cheaper, so budget-minded fans may appreciate it. As for the sound, it is superior to any of the LP versions of A Tramp Shining, with Webb's reliance on stereo separation for important timbral effects coming through bright and sharp throughout -- a small, muted string ...

C'Est La Vie songs
$38.09 John Frusciante is the guitarist from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
This solo outing from Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante includes the extra track "Resolution" not available on the original release.
With the opening kick of a simple but loud drum machine beat and multiple full-throttle guitar wails over the top, it quickly becomes apparent that John Frusciante has also given a swift kick to his heroin addiction. Hard drugs left the Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist derailed, deranged, and near death before an L.A. Weekly reporter detailed his frail state in a chilling story, moving some friends to help Frusciante check into a rehab center. He got off drugs and rejoined the Peppers in time to help Californication become a critical and popular success in 1999. In his time off from the band, however, Frusciante released two solo records, which he later admitted were made for drug money. Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt and Smile From the Streets You Hold displayed an intriguingly dark departure from the Peppers' polished funky punk. The scratchy and ...

| | Wizz Jones Legendary Me CD (2006)
C'Est La Vie music CDs
$14.19 The Legendary Me by guitarist Wizz Jones was his third offering released in November of 1970 in Great Britain; it was issued by the Village Thing label run by Ian Anderson (later founding editor of Folk Roots magazine) and Gef Lucena of SayDisc. Jones' guitaristry was trademark, full of blues, old world modes and lyric lines, burning finger-picking, and a sense of humor to go with it all; he is often compared to John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, but he's better than both and is in the same league as the legendary Davy Graham. As for the cuts themselves, the highlights include no less than eight by British artist, and close friend of Jones, Alan Turnbridge, a fine read of Rev. Gary Davis' "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning," the traditional "Willie Moore," and a single original by Jones, "If Only I'd Known." Jones is a better interpreter than a songwriter, but the off-kilter, semi-ragtime melody is beautiful. "Dazzling Stranger," by Turnbridge -- an earlier version appeared on Jones' 16 Tons of Bluegrass issued on Columbia in 1966 -- and features no less than Ralph McTell on harmonium (he also appears on "When I Cease to Care" playing electric guitar) and is one of the true high points here. So are "Willie Moore," and "Slow Down to My Speed," with vocalist Reanna James on piano. Peter Berryman also contributes to a pair of the album's cuts including the title written by Turnbridge. Although another of Jones' Columbia records, Right Now, is usually regarded as his classic, The Legendary Me is not only every bit as good, ...
