Martyn shared the break-up of his marriage to Beverly by tearing open his heart and exposing all his emotions on record. Those listeners who were experiencing similar problems found it torturously compelling. The three emotional killers run consecutively--"Sweet Little Mystery," "Hurt In Your Heart" and "Baby Please Come Home." Each one pleads, begs and reasons and inevitably you ask, how on earth could she leave him? The answer is in the penultimate track where our John announces, "I saved some for me" and "I didn't give it all." If you survived this album you can survive anything in later life, as our John has.Q (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is last truly great album....There's plenty of bitterness and regret, but unusually for a break-up album by a man, little self-pity and, on 'Hurt In Your Heart', a touching plea for friendship." Uncut (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[The songs] capture Martyn at his aching, bittersweet best, enhanced by John Gribbin's elliptical, jazzy basslines." Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n album of fathomless depth and nuance..." Mojo (Publisher) (4/04, p.142) - "[A] richly textured record on which woozy fretless bass and melting Fender Rhodes act like a salve....[A] classy - and refreshingly magnanimous - break-up record." Grace & Danger album
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like ...
| | John Martyn Glorious Fool CD (1981) (Import) Netherlands
Grace & Danger CD music
$13.15 From much-loved folk/rock star John Martyn comes SOLID AIR, which is regarded as the pinnacle of his career. GLORIOUS FOOL is, however, a 1982 rival for SOLID AIR's status, and includes 11 songs produced by former Genesis drummer Phil Collins.
With a new label and a big-name producer, Glorious Fool, John Martyn's first release following his departure from Island Records, looked to be his best shot at mainstream acceptance. Produced by Phil Collins, who was riding a wave of popularity, and featuring Eric Clapton (who had previously ...

Grace & Danger music CDs
$13.59 Originally released on United Artists. Includes liner notes by Richie Unterberger.
American Flyer has long been a favorite of singer/songwriter, L.A. country-rock, and '70s soft rock aficionados, partially because of the group's supergroup status, but chiefly because the music they made was very, very good. That pedigree was indeed impressive, with the four members consisting of former Pure Prairie League member Craig Fuller, Eric Kaz of the Blues Magoos, Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground, and Steve Katz, formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears -- maybe not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in terms of marquee ...

Grace & Danger CD music
$8.29 There are few female artists who can vocally compete with Joy Lynn White. Her two previous Nashville projects set her aside from all the cute girlie-girls the pop-slop country format manufactured. This, her first project with top West Coast producers Dusty Wakeman and Pete Anderson, provides more evidence of her vocal talent. Recorded in Los Angeles and with songs written by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Jann Browne, and Jimmy Lauderdale to ensure the high caliber of the material and musicians like Lauderdale, Scott Joss, Larry Mars, Tom Brumley, ...

Grace & Danger CD music
$15.09 When, at the Biennale Musica 2003, I heard someone speak of "creative soloism", i.e. the idea of a performer who is "the author of himself, the performer of other's writings, or the creator of a parallel score", I finally rediscovered the approach to music with which I have always had an affinity. Over the course of my artistic career I have often experienced a kind of identity crisis stemming from the difficulty in finding an exact definition for my dual role as creator and performer; this also holds true with regard to the mechanisms required by the world of today's performer. Every definition has always cramped me unbearably. My appoach to music, even in my preference for song (but wich kind of song? opera or popular? I feel that both belong to me) has always demanded transversal expression, the use of diverse narrative means with the creation of texts (to match musical projects), the composition of music, research into melodies from the past and the study of ancient verbal languages. The "temporal space" in which ...
