The results of those solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, Drake recorded PINK MOON's dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. The most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably "Parasite," a visceral-but-mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succor, with Drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering, "take a look, you may see me in the dirt." This was the end of the road for Nick Drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters subsequently inspired by his bleak-but-beautiful visions.

It's widely reported that by the time Nick Drake got around to recording his third and final album, PINK MOON, his already-precarious mental/emotional state had drastically deteriorated. In a deep depression, Drake recorded a brace of solo acoustic tunes, dropped the tape off unannounced at the label's office one day, and that was the last the world at large ever heard of Drake's music.

Alongside Nick's other 2 albums, I rate this to be the very best. Raw, simple, elegant....., if only he could have produced more albums, but alas, it was not meant to be.

My number 1 record of all time
Nick's last full album before death. His emotional pain is palbable in both the music and lyrics. If you like acoustic music, this is essential listening

It's rare that a simple vocal & guitar album will keep your attention all the way through, but Drake does just that here. To me, this is the quintessential Nick Drake.

Melancholy at its Sweetest
This is truly a beautiful album. The soft restraint in Drake's voice is evident throughout the album. His picking is fantastic, strumming lovely chords with accomanying bass lines make you think there's another guitar. But there isn't. Just Nick. No need for additional strings. A musician of his caliber and sensitivity needs nothing but a guitar. Amen for this gem.

Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again ...
