TOO MUCH ACID? captures the 1989 stage show of Alien Sex Fiend, the gothic-industrial band led by Nik Fiend.
Even though this live blast of Fiend madness obviously lacks the visual elements of the band's performances that makes them so memorable -- prosthetic organs and massive cobwebs are just the start of it -- Too Much Acid? answers its own question pretty easily. If the Fiends aren't necessarily ripped on LSD or anything else, the musical dementia on display becomes a handy substitute for the real thing. Recorded at various dates during the European leg for the Another Planet album, the set list is heavy on material from that and It, plus a number of singles cuts from around that time, demonstrating nicely that the group was far from a revival act even when most of its Batcave contemporaries had long since disappeared. The guitar/drum combination of new members Rat Fink, Jr. and Doctor Milton serves up the feedback and beat with power, while Mr. and Mrs. Fiend respectively rant and man the keyboards with their usual gusto. "I Walk the Line" gets a fierce rendition here, possibly even more unnerving than the studio take, while the It album track "Get Into It," on vinyl an amusing enough trifle, gets a better vocal and more bombastic rendition as a forceful call to the beat here. Things drag a bit in the middle, but starting with a solid rip through "Haunted House" (which if nothing else confirms that it isn't all that house, but has tons of samples), there's no holding back. "Smells Like..." isn't quite the equal of the original, but the beat is pounding, and Nik Fiend just goes off and then some. From there it's takes on the band's cover of "Hurricane Fighter Plane," the highly and entertainingly rude "Sample My Sausage" (aggrieved Blackadder sample fully intact) and, to close things out, a blast through the old B-side "Boneshaker Baby," here easily made the equal of most of the Cramps' back catalog. ~ Ned Raggett

Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," ...

$11.49 There were few important new male jazz singers on the scene when Kevin Mahogany released his stunning CD debut as a leader, accompanied by a first-call rhythm section consisting of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Lewis Nash, plus tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore added on selected tracks. Gifted with a rich baritone, Mahogany begins with a powerful interpretation of "All Blues," followed by a fun scatted exchange with Nash to introduce a romp through "Confirmation," in which he masters Eddie Jefferson's vocalese lyrics at a fast tempo without a slip and ...

Too Much Acid
$15.15 For nearly two decades, not much was heard from one of the '80s top mainstream rock acts, Survivor. In the wake of 1988's Too Hot to Sleep, it seemed as if the band had fallen off the face of the earth. But with renewed interest in '80s rock circa the early 21st century, three Survivor veterans -- singer Jimi Jamison (not the "Eye of the Tiger" guy, he's the "Burning Heart" guy), guitarist Frankie Sullivan, and drummer Marc Droubay -- opted to resuscitate the band, with 2006's Reach. Unlike some other acts of the '80s who attempt to keep pace with the young pups by updating their sound (and oft-times floundering), Reach finds Survivor sticking with what they know best. And of course, that's melodic rockers with a clean production, as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening ...
| | Beach Boys Warmth Of The Sun CD (2006)
Too Much Acid
$13.89 The Warmth of the Sun is designed to serve as a companion piece to 2003's Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys, and as such, it is perfect. While that earlier volume contained most of the Beach Boys' biggest hits, the cornerstones of the catalog such as "I Get Around," "Surfer Girl," "California Girls," and "Fun, Fun, Fun," the follow-up is, in its own way, just as strong and just as enjoyable. In fact, while listening to it, a fan might wonder why the compilers in 2003 didn't just make Sounds of Summer a double album, include all of this material as well, and be done with it. Certainly, songs like "Catch a Wave," "409," "Surf's Up," "Wendy," and, of course, the title track are every bit as essential to a basic Beach Boys collection as any given track on the previous set. But The Warmth of the Sun not only stands tall by itself, some hardcore fans might prefer it, as some of the tunes on the first collection are so overexposed that there is little desire to ever hear them again. Gems included in this sequel, such as "You're So Good to Me," "Let Him Run Wild," "'Til I Die," "The Little Girl I Once Knew," and "Disney Girls (1957)" ...
