Barabbas (Anthony Quinn) is a man literally marked with the blood of Jesus. Before being crucified, Jesus is brutally flogged while tied to a post outside Barabbas' cell. When released by decree of the people, Barabbas staggers into this post, covering his hands in Christ's blood. His life is never the same again. BARABBAS is a powerful, vigorous movie, unlike most of the slow and reverential, Biblical epics that were being made in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Also unlike most of those movies, BARABBAS was not directly based on the Bible, which may have been less constraining to director Richard Fleischer and his collaborators. The movie is based on Noble Prize winner Pär Lagerkvist's novel, and has dialogue by poet and dramatist Christopher Fry. Visually, the film is very robust. Fleischer and director of photography, Aldo Tonti, use large masses of color against neutral backgrounds, often suppressing brighter colors. When they do allow bright light into the frame, it is dramatically striking. Also, as in most Fleischer movies, the camera movements are bold and confident. Given Fleischer's visual style, it is perhaps not surprising that the brutal gladiatorial scenes in BARABBAS were not equaled for almost years--until Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR was released in 2000.

When thief and murderer Barabbas (Anthony Quinn) is freed by the people of Judea rather than Jesus of Nazareth, the criminal struggles to understand why he was chosen to live. Rachel (Silvanno Mangano), the woman he loves, becomes a follower of Jesus, whom she believes has risen from the tomb. Barabbas, however, is unconvinced. Caught preaching, Rachel is stoned to death. Barabbas is sentenced to life working in the sulphur mines. Years later, when Barabbas is chained to Sarak (Vittorio Gassman), a Christian, the mines collapse. Barabbas and Sahak escape, and are taken to Rome and trained to fight. In the Coliseum, Barabbas eventually faces the villainous Torvald (Jack Palance). Academy Award-winning director Richard Fleischer's fictional look at one of the New Testament's most stirring passages showcases strong performances all around.

Theatrical release in New York City: October 10, 1962. The film's world premiere was on June 4, 1962 at the Odeon Haymarket in London, England. BARABBAS was shot on location in Italy and at the Dino De Laurentiis Studios in Mezzogiorno, Italy. BARABBAS is based on the novel for which Pär Lagerqvist won the Noble Prize for Literature in 1951. The solar eclipse that takes place during the crucifixion scene was a real solar eclipse. Director Richard Fleischer delayed shooting in order to capture the actual phenomenon on camera. There is some confusion over the script and editing credits for BARABBAS. The U.S. version of the movie gives sole credit to Christopher Fry (for the script) and Raymond Poulton (for the editing). Most sources suggest that, as well as Fry, Nigel Balchin, Diego Fabri and Ivo Perilli made uncredited contributions to the script, and it is possible that Salvatore Quasimodo had some involvement as well. As to the editing, some sources give credit to Alberto Galliti, omitting Poulton's name altogether. One possible explanation is that the U.S. and Italian versions of the movie may have been somewhat different with different people working on them.

3 stars Great Anthony Quinn biblical classic
An accused murderer, Barabbas was the one chosen by the people to be released during the trial of Jesus of Nazareth. Anthony Quinn portrays his life very effectively as he goes from being a hated free man to spending years as a Roman prisoner and gladiator. During these years, he learns more about the man who was put to death in his place and the people who follwed him by spreading his teachings to those willing to listen. In the end, Barabbas tries to right the wrong, but ends up in prison again and facing crucifixion for what he believed was the return of Christ. On the cross, he finally realizes his errors and tries to repent before his own death. Great film for fans of Anthony Quinn.

5 stars Quinn Remarkable as Barabbas
The year 1963 was Anthony Quinn's greatest year. He gave three different and brillaint performances: as the Sheik in Lawrence of Arabia; the wash-up heavyweight fighter Mountain Rivera in Requim for a Heavyweight; and as the thief who was spared for Chirst in Barabbas. Incredibly, he was not nominated for any of these trio of great performances. Barabbas is a moving, touching, and perceptive film about redemption and retribution. Shot in Italy, no money was spared in this deeply personal film that is also an epic. A standout cast that includes Silvana Mangano, Katy Jurado, Vittorrio Gassman, Jack Palance, and the indestructable Ernest Borgnine make this powerful religious story. At the center is Quinn's brilliant and nuanced perfromance.

Einar (Kirk Douglas), a hideously scarred Viking warrior, seeks land acquisition and the hand of the beautiful Princess Morgana (Janel Leigh). Einar crosses paths with Eric (Tony Curtis) who has his sights set on the same prizes. The two have more in common than they know; unbeknownst to one another, they are brothers. This 1958 epic was based on an actual Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok, a sadistic and adventurous sailor. While not very rooted in fact, the film is a rousing adventure with lusty, violent imagery very bold for its time. A scene where Janet Leigh's clothing is ripped, enabling her to row a boat and exposing her back was considered very risque and undoubtedly added to the film's stellar performance at the box office. Ernest Borgnine shines as Ragnar and Jack Cardiff's photography is breathtaking. An opening animated historical prelude is narrated by Orson Welles. The personal battle between Einar, the son of the Viking king Ragnar, and a slave named Eric, the illegitimate brother of Einar unbeknowst to everyone but Ragnar, comes to a head when both lay claim to a Welsh princess that Einar and Ragnar kidnapped for ransom.

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful pacing, excellent dialogue, and haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, is still a treat for contemporary audiences. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu, who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort, to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. Stars Stars Michael Rennie, Robert Osterloh, Lock Martin, Patricia Neal.

Based on a best-selling novel by Lloyd C. Douglas, THE ROBE is one of the best Biblical epics of all time. Richard Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, a Roman who, after leading the crucifixion of Christ, takes home Jesus’ robe and is subsequently torn by nightmares and guilt. A distraught Marcellus makes his way back to Palestine, where a humble attempt to discover more about the man who died by his hand puts him on a miraculous path toward redemption. Originally released in 1953, this crisp and vibrant film was one of the first to be filmed in beautiful, expansive CinemaScope. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best (Color) Cinematography, Best (Color) Costume Design, and Best (Color) Set Direction-Art Direction. Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, and Jay Robinson offer stellar supporting roles. Richard Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, the Roman centurian charged with overseeing the crucifixion of Christ. But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed. The first movie ever filmed in CinemaScope, "The Robe" was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1953, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Burton, and it remains on of the screen's greatest Biblical epics.
