Estella Warren, Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Tim Roth - Director: Tim Burton In remaking this classic sci-fi horror film, director Tim Burton takes on a whopping challenge and succeeds. Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is part of a space station crew that, in the year 2029, is conducting experiments in training genetically engineered chimps to perform complex away missions. When Leo's chimp disappears into a worm hole, Leo unadvisedly goes after him, ending up in a parallel world in which the monkeys are the keepers and humans are traded and caged like animals. It's a horrifying place, and the whole atmosphere, colored by Burton's direction and Rick Baker's incredible special effects makeup, is charged with terror. Leo becomes a heroic figure in the eyes of his defeated human brethren, and he puts his trust--and his hope for escape--in Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a forward-thinking ape who believes in human rights. But Leo has formidable opponents in Thade (Tim Roth) and Attar (Michael Clark Duncan), two power-hungry, testosterone-charged apes who wish to rid the planet of humans altogether. This excellent rendition of PLANET OF THE APES is more than just a remake: it includes intense physicality on the part of the actors, complex mythology lacing the story, chilling philosophical realizations, and an amazing cameo by original APES star Charlton Heston. The combination of those complex parts makes for a riveting viewing experience. Planet Of The Apes Reviews: "...Rick Baker's ape makeup creations are wonderfully varied...and represent a definite leap beyond what was possible 33 years ago..."
-- Todd McCarthy, Variety "...This remake of PLANET shows a sparkling guile....The jokes and scares build to a lovely touch....Mr. Wahlberg has mastered the fine art of underplaying..."
-- Elvis Mitchell, New York Times "...[Roth gives] a performance of gnashing wit and ferocity....The apes in PLANET OF THE APES have character....The movie is all but destined to become Burton's second hit in a row..."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...These creatures snarl, swing from trees and bare their teeth with startling authenticity, and each one looks different. Baker's work is monumental..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...The key reason for Burton's preeminence is very much on display in PLANET OF THE APES, and that is his exceptional visual gift..."

Planet Of The Apes Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Great makeup but so what ?? The Heston 1968 version was superb, especially with its surprise ending. The Burton 2001 version however, is pointless, not to mention a dumb ending that raises more questions than answers. I don't get it. Submitted by Terry (Hamilton, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Great movie ! Great re-make ! I saw The Planet of the Apes ages ago, I still hold a VHS copy from back then. I am not big on re-makes, but I am a big Tim Burton fan so I had to give it a shot. Tho the movie keeps the basics from the original, it does have a 21st century movie and of course the Buron touch ; dark photography and psicologically interesting, if you will, characters, and the sarcasm on the human mind and body wasn't missing either. Ending is different and great, tho it kinda gives the same message, we came to an end. Great movie, great re-make. A must in you collection. Submitted by hsanmartin (Mexico, Mexico.) on the edge This movie was a "chair gripper" from start to finish. The music and action footage were done paying great attention to detail and timing. Growing up with the originals I feel this creation was a compliment. It is a must see for anyone who grew up in the 70's. Submitted by a reviewer (Topeka,KS,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Planet perfection !! Tim Burton keeps coming up with fabulous eye candy for film goers to soak in. This looks better than when I saw it at the cinema, details are clearer and the soundtrack is tremendous. A great demonstrator for your system, well worth buying. 2001 special effects/costumes could be better The movie was okay, but the special effects and costumes were not that impressive, given some of the computer animation out there these days that could have been used and apparently wasn't. The story could have been better developed, also - just wasn't that convincing to me anyway. Your call... Submitted by a reviewer (Peoria, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Planet Of The Apes film
$6.29 Pleased with the success of 1996's initial presentation, HBO gathered another group of successful actresses for IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2. Set in the same suburban house as the original--but with different inhabitants--this made-for-cable trilogy is a dramatic exploration into the lives of three separate lesbian couples in three different moments in history. The first chapter, 1961, tells the somber story of an aging woman (Vanessa Redgrave) who is left facing prejudice and intolerance after the death of her longtime companion. Unable to come to terms with her complex situation, she is forced to suffer alone, confused and distraught. The second installment, 1972, follows a young lesbian college student (Michelle Williams) who falls in love with a masculine woman (Chloe Sevigny). Unfortunately, her feminist friends refuse to accept their union, creating even more turmoil in the young woman's life. The film concludes with 2000, which tells the story of a lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) who are searching for the perfect sperm donor to start a family. Featuring standout performances by Redgrave (who won a Golden Globe for her heartbreaking performance), Sevigny, and Stone, this enlightening made-for-cable drama was nominated for four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie.

Planet Of The Apes review
$13.55 The first of three prequels to George Lucas's celebrated STAR WARS films, EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE is set some 30 years before the original STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE in the era of the Republic. Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young but wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), is being threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice, Darth Maul (Ray Park). Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, performing an amazing vocal imitation of Alec Guinness, the older Obi-Wan) are called on to intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of young prodigy Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), or as STAR WARS fans know him, the future Darth Vader. They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), a goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished from his underwater world for clumsiness. When the Trade Federation launches an attack on Naboo, the queen and her allies must battle hordes of robot troopers while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off against the sinister Darth Maul.
One of the most anticipated films of all time, THE PHANTOM MENACE sets the stage for the tumultuous events to come. Lucas fills the screen with detailed sci-fi creatures and locations, revealing the most creative and exquisite sets, costumes, and character designs to hit the screen since the original trilogy.

Planet Of The Apes DVD
$9.29 This adaptation of the classic sci-fi adventure tale by H.G. Wells, directed by Simon Wells (the great-grandson of the author), stars Guy Pearce as Alex Hartdegen, an absentminded New York professor preoccupied with what passes for technology at the turn of the 20th century. However, the one thing that can distract him from his calculations is his love for Emma (Sienna Guillory), his bride-to-be. When tragedy strikes and he loses Emma, Alex uses the time-travelling machine that he's built in secret to change the present by going into the past. When that fails to alter fate, he leaps forward in time, eventually landing 800,000 years in the future, an era where humanity has splintered into two races--the docile Eloi and the ferocious Morlocks. There Alex befriends two of the Eloi (Samantha and Omero Mumba) and attempts to help them resist almost certain death at the hands of the Morlocks.
Like Pearce's character, this version of the novel is fascinated with technology and uses a daunting array of special effects. The fast-paced film was apparently not made without incident--Wells reportedly had a nervous breakdown during the shoot. Regardless of production difficulties, THE TIME MACHINE is an engaging spectacle that's anchored by Pearce and enhanced by the commanding appearance of Jeremy Irons.
