| | Rohn Lawrence See Ya Around CD (1998)
Glenn Medeiros music CDs
$12.79 Rohn Lawrence's first release on the Jazzateria label, entitled See Ya Around, is a smooth follow-up to his 1994 Atlantic Jazz debut entitled Hangin' On a String. It not only props the door open for the crossover artist to represent and establish himself in the diverse contemporary jazz genre, but gives listeners a preview of Lawrence's ability to create a joyous feeling. Tracks such as "See Ya' Around," and the ballad "A Woman Like You" skillfully display the vocal talent of Lawrence, while "It's All In You" and "Home for My Heart" showcase his extraordinary guitar playing, commemorative of George Benson. Rohn Lawrence has contributed a consummate artistic expression to the universal bond of music that will attract new listeners and nourish his popularity and audience. ~ Paula Edelstein

Glenn Medeiros album
$7.59 Recorded between 1983 & 2000. Includes liner notes by Pete Burns.
Gh + 3 Newly Re-Recorded Songs
Evolution: The Hits is a good summary of Dead or Alive's most popular material, concentrating on their chart hits. And there were more of those than you might remember -- eight are included that made the U.K. listings, along with four that made the U.S. charts (all of which charted in the U.K., too), including "You Spin Me Around (Like a Record)," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)," "That's the Way (I Like It)," "In Too Deep," and "Something in My House." Popular as some of this stuff might have been, it really epitomizes some of the silliest and most histrionic aspects of those strange days when new wave and the new romantics were being diluted yet further into synth-heavy dance-pop. Three tracks here make their U.S. debut, although these are all from post-'80s releases: "Sex Drive" was released on 1995's Nukleopatra and "Hit & Run Lover" and "Isn't It a Pity" on 1991's Fragile (the latter was only issued in Japan). Also on board are a 2003 remix of "Turn Around Count 2 Ten" and a "metro 7" edit" "You Spin Me Around (Like a Record)," neither of which was strictly necessary unless Epic/Legacy was desperate ...

| | Da Lench Mob Guerillas In Tha Mist CD (1992)
Glenn Medeiros songs
$7.59 Looking like a cross between the Black Panthers and the Zapatistas on the album cover, Da Lench Mob fully embrace an urban revolutionary rhetoric consistent with their image. Unrepentantly political music of any sort can be difficult to listen to -- particularly when it is almost blindly angry and coming from an inherently (though understandably) biased point of view, and also when it sidesteps some of the subtleties of the issues it raises. Guerillas in tha Mist, the group's debut album, is guilty of all those things, and yet it is an often brilliant, always invigorating, sometimes infuriating scowl of an album. The album is a relentless onslaught of attitude, but it is not misplaced vehemence or finger-wagging.The final song on the album is titled "Inside tha Head of a Black Man," and that is exactly the psychic and psychological space that Guerillas in tha Mist occupies: confused, chaotic, complex, righteous, angry, and turbulent, but also permeated with a sense of braggadocio and looseness. Just because they have trouble on their mind doesn't mean they can't swing, too, and Ice Cube's production does just that, especially on tunes such as "All on My Nut Sac," "Freedom Got an A.K.," and the title track. He loads the songs with rolling fatback bass and funky keyboard riffs, and fills in every empty space with some sort of noise, generally a horn or siren or whistle. When listening to Guerillas in tha Mist, it is virtually impossible to catch your breath; in fact, it is so powerfully urgent that it feels as if you've just been punched in the gut. But when experiencing something this significant and consequential, you shouldn't want the blow to be pulled just to ...
| | Throcult Soldiers Of A Blackened War CD (2003)
Glenn Medeiros album
$11.65 The terms grindcore and death metal have often been used interchangeably, which makes sense because a lot of death metal bands are also grindcore bands -- Carcass, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide are examples that immediately come to mind. But there are also many death metal/black metal combos that don't have the grindcore mentality. True grindcore bands live for speed and ultra-fast tempos, whereas an outfit like Throcult (which is death metal/black metal but not grindcore) prefers to play at different tempos. And Soldiers of a Blackened War is, in its own extreme and ferocious way, more musical than the sort of death metal/grindcore discs that are ultra-fast from start to finish. That isn't to say that the headbangers formerly known as Throat Culture don't enjoy playing fast -- this mosh pit-friendly CD has more than its share of high-speed brutality. But while grindcore is a strong influence, Throcult often slows things down. Whatever the tempo, Soldiers of a Blackened War is blistering -- and lead singer Chris Vigil's demonic growl adds to the brutality factor. Vigil's vocal style makes the lyrics, which favor death metal's usual Occult-minded themes, and are hard to understand without the lyric sheet; he also makes the material less accessible (by more mainstream metal standards) and detracts from the overall musicality. At the same time, Vigil's abrasive vocals help to maintain a tortured ambience -- and quite frankly, a lot of death metal fans are more interested in sensory assault than musicality or being able to understand the lyrics. Soldiers of a Blackened War ...
