Trumpeter Bunk Johnson recorded extensively with his band of New Orleanians during 1944-45, including multiple performances of some of their selections. The American Music label, in their series of Bunk CDs, have straightened out the music to an extent, although some alternate takes have still only come out on sets by Japanese companies and the performances have not been reissued in strict chronological order. This CD has 15 selections from four sessions that took place within a five-day period. Johnson is joined by drummer Baby Dodds and the nucleus of what would six years later be the George Lewis band (Lewis on clarinet, trombonist Jim Robinson, banjoist Lawrence Marrero and bassist Alcide Pavageau). In general, Bunk sounds fairly strong and, although Lewis is sometimes out of tune, the joy of the ensemble oriented music overrides any occasional technical deficiencies. Myrtle Jones helps out with a vocal on "My Life Will Be Sweeter Someday." Among the better selections are "We Will Walk Through the Streets of the City," a previously unreleased version of "Sister Kate," "There's Yes Yes in Your Eyes," "Panama" and "When the Saints Go Marching In." ~ Scott Yanow

Sound, Roscoe Mitchell's debut as a leader, was an early free jazz landmark and an enormously groundbreaking album in many respects. Historically, it marked the very first time that members of Chicago's seminal AACM community appeared on record; it also showcased the early chemistry between future Art Ensemble of Chicago members Mitchell, Lester Bowie, ...

$16.25 Composed by pianist/leader Vyacheslav Ganelin, Ancora Da Capo is an inspired major work consisting of two parts, recorded live on two separate occasions in 1980 and each nearly 40 minutes long. The Ganelin Trio's brand of loosely structured free jazz was something really distinctive, though unfamiliar listeners might use the Art Ensemble of Chicago as a loose comparison since the two groups share several common elements: multi-instrumentalism (the trio's members play 16 instruments among themselves ...

| | Greatest Show On Earth Horizons CD (1970) Bonus Track; Remastered
1944 album
$16.65 Although the Greatest Show on Earth (GSOE) were not the first bunch of rockers to incorporate a powerful brass and woodwind section, they are among the best and heaviest-sounding British bands to have emerged from the post-psychedelia of the late '60s and early '70s. GSOE were, in essence, the invention of EMI Records subsidiary Harvest, who were focusing in on new and progressive artists such as Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. When the group was initially signed in 1968, they were an R&B/soul revue whose forte was more along the lines of Stax or Motown, instead of trippy acid rock. After ditching their original vocalist, Ozzie Lane, they eventually settled on Colin Horton Jennings, a multi-faceted performer who would begin to compose originals that would allow the octet to incrementally abandon their Yankee soul leanings. After a few months of woodshedding new tunes, they emerged with a fresh sound and material for their debut, Horizons (1970). The extracted single "Real Cool World" is marked by its open-throttle, galloping tempo and some equally pungent electric organ riffs. As such, it was also given a few cursory spins on BBC's Radio One; however, the remainder of the disc was criminally overlooked. To modern ears, this is a great shame, as the effort is full of well-crafted and adeptly executed material. Of primary interest is the aggressive rocker "Angelina" and the groovy "Skylight Man." The latter title features a brief and buoyant trumpet-led introduction by Dick Hanson that recalls the Tijuana Brass more so than, say, Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chicago. The darker "I Fought for Love" stands as one of the edgier sides and is augmented by some stellar organ leads and fills from Mick Deacon. The title track extends over a quarter-hour and allows the combo room to demonstrate their remarkable improvisational skills in the context of an ensemble. In particular, Ron ...

1944 music CDs
$8.39 After listening to it, we think it's a great album and we hope that we'll be able to obtain a local release.NEW MUSIC/Madrid, SpainValcruz Shekiri and Christopher Martin have been playing and writing songs together since they were teenagers. After composing several tunes and much recording Martin/Shekiri released their first record, 'Point Of Power' in 1985 which drew a lot of air play. Carl Sawyer, program director for KASY radio featured many songs from the album and saw to it that Martin/Shekiri were listed in the August 1985 issue of 'The Gavin Report'.In 1987 Martin/Shekiri released a 4 song EP which drew major label and more radio attention, and with the break out tunes, 'I Can't Sleep In Paris' and 'City Lights' that airplay extended to Europe and especially Paris , France dance clubs. Martin/Shekiri now reformed as Venice In Peril have released their first CD: ' In A Year Of 13 Moons'The Words and Music'In A Year Of 13 Moons' is a CD which explores various musical styles and lyrical ideas. The lead off song, 'Invocation', is a contemporary classical instrumental piece which sets the mood for the CD. 'After The Love Is Gone' and 'Hard To Believe' are essentially love songs written in a current "pop" vein. There are four lyrical tunes which cross over into a new type of blues/jazz feel: 'Bless You', 'Ill Wind', 'Come Away With Me', and 'Why'. 'It's Gonna Take Time' enters into a different area of blues, rock and traditional music. 'Maybe We Should Pray' and 'Radioactive' demonstrate r&b, funk and rock. 'Turn Away' features the dulcimer as the central instrument. 'I Wonder' and 'We Can Change The World' are definitely urban lyrical ideas written in the blues/jazz arena. 'Someday Is Too Late' and " State Of Emergency' feature the banjo and redefine the instrument. On these tunes the banjo and electric guitar take on a new form of communication. Finally, we also include three instrumental tunes which help us thread the theme of the CD and explore different instrumentations utilizing the m'bira and digeridu, as well as arrangements. These are 'Musicbox', 'An Aboriginal Feeling' and 'We Can Change The World Reprise'We hope you enjoy the CD.-Christopher Martin...
