| | Kid Ory At The Green Room, Vol. 1 CD Kid Ory Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recently released for the first time, this is the first of two volumes that documents Kid Ory's 1947 band live during a gig. Recorded without the knowledge of the musicians (which include trombonist Ory, trumpeter Mutt Carey and clarinetist Joe Darensbourg), most of the music they played on that particular evening is on these CDs. The first volume is the weaker of the two for the New Orleans jazz band is saddled with requests for swing standards that do not fit their style that well; Ory grudgingly ran through 13 of these tunes as quickly as possible before playing six songs that fit better in his band's repertoire. The music has its moments but the recording quality is just so-so and it takes awhile for Mutt Carey to get warmed up. The second volume is much better. ~ Scott Yanow

Kid Ory At The Green Room, Vol. 1
$7.59 The resurrected Buddha acquired the rights to much of Rory Gallagher's prime material in 1999. They began their reissue program with his first two albums, then they moved to what most hardcore fans would consider the crown jewel of the series, a double-disc collection of Gallagher's BBC sessions. Like most lead guitarists ...

| | Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson 1947-1949 CD (2002)
Kid Ory At The Green Room, Vol. 1
$12.89 Cleanhead Vinson recorded a dozen sides for Mercury during the second half of 1947, using a significantly smaller ensemble than the big band he'd assembled in 1945. His scaled-down group was composed of trumpeter John Hunt, tenor saxophonist Lee Pope, baritone saxophonist Greely Walton, and a strong rhythm section in Earl Van Riper, Leonard Swain, and Butch Ballard. This is easy-flowing jump blues fortified with Vinson's powerful voice and righteous alto sax. "Oil Man Blues," a pleasantly smutty tribute to human sexuality filled with bold references to "drilling" and "flowing," fits nicely into a long tradition of sexually informed blues and boogie. "I Took the Front Door In," a bracing report on domestic chicanery, opens with a fine alto sax solo not unlike ...
| | Manfred Mann Solar Fire CD (1973)
Kid Ory At The Green Room, Vol. 1
$37.25 Fans of muscular progressive rock will love Solar Fire, a concept album loosely designed around cosmology. The album opens with the majestic "Father of Night, Father of Day," which has the drive and complexity of a prime King Crimson track. As unlikely as it may seem, the track was controversial in Mann's native South Africa because of the "Father of black, father of white" line, implying that apartheid might not extend to infinite space. The album moves on to the progressive rock/jazz fusion of "In the Beginning, Darkness," a swinging, even funky track that benefits from soulful vocals by Doreen Chanter and Irene Chanter of the Grove Singers. The same duo contributes to the title track, a slow piece that begins with a fairly standard rock structure and incorporates a massive progressive jam in the middle. The instrumental suite which follows is a showcase for the combination of angular, sometimes slightly dissonant guitar with fluid keyboard work, and the band rocks straight through with stately grace. Once again, one is reminded of early King Crimson, which was about the only other group to turn out complex, shifting instrumentals of this quality. The album closes with the strange ...
