| | Allman Brothers Band Still Rockin' CD Allman Brothers Band Discography of CDs
STILL ROCKIN' contains tracks off the albums REACH FOR THE SKY (1980) and BROTHERS OF THE ROAD (1981).
Allman Brothers Band includes: Gregg Allman (vocals); Dickey Betts (guitar); Butch Trucks (drums).
This budget compilation surveys the Allman Brothers Band's recordings of the early '80s. After the demise of Capricorn Records, the Allmans signed to Arista Records in 1980 and released their seventh new studio album, Reach for the Sky, a commercial disappointment that was their first such LP not to reach the Top Ten or gold since their breakthrough in 1971, though it featured the chart single "Angeline." Brothers of the Road (1981) was another modest seller, despite boasting the Top 40 single "Straight From the Heart," and with that the Allmans disbanded for the second time, not reuniting again until 1989. As such, the Arista recordings do not mark a high point in their career, though fans unable to obtain the two chart singles on compilations assembled by Universal (which controls the Capricorn recordings) may wish to pick up this ten-track condensation of Reach for the Sky and Brothers of the Road. Note that little thought seems to have been put into the collection, however. It is the first album to be billed to "the Allman Brothers" rather than the Allman Brothers Band, and the cover photograph depicts the 1973-1976 lineup of the group, not the one that plays on these recordings. ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded in 1980 & 1981.

Still Rockin'
$7.59 Also available as a 3-pack with AN EVENING WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND-1ST SET and SEVEN TURNS.
Recorded live at Walnut Creek Amphitheater, Raleigh, North Carolina on July 1, 1994; Garden State Arts Center, Holmdel, New Jersey on August 16, 1994; Club R&R, Los Angeles, California on June 11, 1992.
"Jessica" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
A kind of companion piece to the 1992 AN EVENING WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, this compilation of live shows from 1992 and 1994 isn't as epochal as LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST (what could be?) but it's an excellent set in its own right. At the very least it demonstrates why the reconstituted Allman Brothers became such an in-demand concert attraction in the '90s.
Miraculously, even though some of the songs here had been in the band's repertoire for as long as 30 years, there ...
| | Lynyrd Skynyrd Nuthin' Fancy CD (1975) Remastered
Still Rockin'
$6.59 Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California).
Besides being a touring warhorse, Lynyrd Skynyrd cranked out albums at a brisk rate during its original lineup's brief recording career, averaging at least one new release per year. 1975 saw the emergence of Skynyrd's third album in as many years, NUTHIN' FANCY.
While the album didn't contain a smash hit ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Win, Lose Or Draw CD (1975) Remastered
Still Rockin'
$9.79 While not exactly on par with such classics as 1969's THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND or 1970's IDLEWILD SOUTH, the Allman Brothers' 1975 release, WIN, LOSE OR DRAW, at least demonstrated that the band was still together, despite a two-year layoff between albums.
Unquestionably the record's highlight is the album-opening cover of Muddy Water's "Can't Lose What You Never Had," but other cuts such as the instrumental "High Falls," the title track and "Nevertheless" also prove to be standouts. Longtime fans could sense trouble brewing behind the scenes, and their instincts proved right--the Allmans would take a three-year sabbatical after one more album, the live WIPE THE WINDOWS.
The followup album to their multi-platinum breakthru album "Brothers & Sisters" fell short on sales but includes some tasty treats nonetheless, ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Enlightened Rogues CD (1979) Remastered
Still Rockin'
$4.89 The Allman Brothers closed out the '70s with a solid if unspectacular set that's aged better than one might have expected. It may not be particularly innovative, but it lacks nothing in the grit and sass departments.
The album begins ("Crazy Love") the way it ends ("Sail Away"), which is to say with two dive-bomb blasts of Dickie Betts' slide guitar. In between there's a nod to John Lee Hooker with "Can't Take It With You," the Chicago blues shuffle of "Need Your Love So Bad," and "Try It One More Time," a '60s style soul ballad. The most interesting piece here, however, is Betts' "Pegasus," a complex instrumental that opens in vaguely Latin mode, segues into some jazz-fusion passages, and concludes with a modal psychedelic jam that seems ...
| | Gregg Allman Playin' Up A Storm CD (1977) Remastered
Still Rockin'
$6.29 In a way, Playin' Up a Storm doesn't really highlight Gregg Allman's strengths, since it's a little smoother and soul-inflected than his work with the Allman Brothers. Then again, that's not a problem; after all, why make a solo album that's exactly like your full-time gig? Consequently, Playin' Up a Storm is a well-made, expertly performed set of blues-rock, soul-pop, and straight-ahead rock & roll. There aren't any true classics here, but the thing that makes it one of Allman's best solo efforts is the terrific performances. Not only is ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Hittin' The Note CD (2003)
Still Rockin'
$13.85 "Instrumental Illness" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
34 years down the line, the Allman Brothers Band shows why they've managed to remain a top concert draw and a vital musical presence. Even a cursory listen to HITTIN' THE NOTE reveals that the band never abandoned the agreeable blend of blues, rock, and country that earned them so much attention from the outset. Original guitarists Dickey Betts and Duane Allman are long gone, of course, but singer/keyboardist Greg Allman and drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe are still on hand from the original lineup, providing a strong musical through line. The guitar ...
