Since keyboardist Rob Mullins in the late 1980s was best known for his poppish crossover recordings and Spike Robinson is a bop/swing player in the Four Brothers tradition, this matchup (which also includes bassist Fred Hamilton and drummer Jill Fredericksen) might at first seem a bit odd. However, all of the musicians were based in Denver at the time; Mullins had gigged with Robinson, and he was flexible enough to play standards. Spike sounds typically fine on such tunes as "In Love, In Vain," "Melancholy Baby," "Street of Dreams" and "I Love You." Although Mullins does double on synthesizer, he fits in quite well. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Odd Couple CD music
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Odd Couple album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal ...

Odd Couple songs
$12.95 Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake have been performing together for more than 30 years and have known each other even longer, but Back Together Again marks their first recording of duets. Anderson can spin endlessly creative melodic improvisations on tenor, and Hamid Drake is every bit his equal on the traps and frame drums. It should be no surprise that this set is amazing. Both men are at the top of their game. Anderson's melodies sometimes go somewhere you're not expecting, doing some wild interval leaps, but he always tells a coherent story. Drake's drumming almost always has a strong melodic concept ...

| | Over The Top CD (1987) Original Soundtrack
Odd Couple CD music
$6.95 This Stallone soundtrack naturally oozes testosterone, and used to be the only place to get Sammy Hagar yelping over Eddie Van Halen runs (on bass no less) in the adrenalized "Winner Takes It All" (remember Hagar arm-wrestling Sly in the video?). "Winner" is actually one of the best cuts from the limp Van Hagar years. Of course, tender moments can be found as well: Kenny Loggins yearns to "Meet Me Half Way." Yes, this bombastic piece of fluff belongs on Top Gun, but it gets ya right here. Halfway between the power and the pansy stands Robin Zander (who had already ventured outside the Trick camp for the Rebbie Jackson duet "You Send the Rain ...
