On the first of two CDs, tenor saxophonist Spike Robinson teams up with trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, pianist Ross Tompkins, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Paul Humphrey. It is not too surprising that Robinson (whose tone often recalls Zoot Sims) works well with swing legend Edison. Although the title piece is a blues, the repertoire is primarily comprised of swing standards, with some heat generated on such tunes as "The One I Love," "Autumn Leaves" and "Slow Boat to China." ~ Scott Yanow

Just A Bit O' Blues, Vol. 1 CD music
$13.75 David Hazeltine, the consummate composer, arranger and improviser, didn't get to be the artist he is without learning from the masters who came before him. For his 8th Sharp Nine release he pays tribute to his two greatest piano influences, Cedar Walton
Jazz pianist David Hazeltine, like many baby-boomer musicians, is influenced by Wes, Buddy, and Monk Montgomery and Cedar Walton. For what he calls his most personally driven recording date, he pays tribute to them by composing a four-part suite inspired by their sounds. Hazeltine and his quintet -- which includes the formidable vibraphonist Joe Locke and longtime collaborator tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander -- give alms with some well-conceived and ...

THE BRIDGE BETWEEN's charismatic wonders evolve right out of your speakers like prog's bastard offspring. After the staid acoustic concerns of the League of Crafty Guitarists, Fripp's latest ensemble indulges, thankfully, in both electric and electronic applications. Fripp is accompanied here by longtime associate Trey ...
