(1 Customer Review)
When The Dillinger Escape Plan initially released the three-song EP UNDER THE RUNNING BOARD, the louder, faster, and crazier arms race that had temporarily been put to rest kicked back in with a vengeance. Dillinger's blistering technique and complex mathematical time-signatures were breathtaking. Only the raw physicality of their shows kept them from being pure metal scientists. Opener "The Mullet Burden" presents a rapidly mutating storm of fretboard heroics and bludgeoning riffs, "Sandbox Magician" twists and turns with the precision of a drill, and "Abe The Cop" stops and starts on a dime, sounding like nothing less than pure industrial manufacturing. The special 2008 anniversary edition adds on nine live tracks that prove the band's dexterity isn't studio-aided.
Personnel: Dimitri Minakakis (vocals); Ben Weinman, Brian Benoit (guitar); Chris Pennie (drums).
Recording information: Trax East, South River, NJ (12/1997).

Under The Running Board album
$11.89 Apparently, Dillinger has solved the complex equation asked of their album title and the answer is strange and complex. Oddly enough, Relapse is marketing this as "math metal," a term that almost fits. Having enjoyed Dillinger's bombastic, grindy punk debut mini-album, Calculating Infinity seems ten times more explosive and brilliant, as it spews forth anger and venomous misery in a way that is comparable only to spontaneous combustion. Continuing to expand upon the ultra-aggressive, deliciously technical approach they adopt toward grind and hardcore, the band has fully embraced its amazing knack for rhythmic melody on tracks like "*#" and "Weekend Sex Change." Fear not Dillinger fans, for there is enough uncontrolled hatred and violence on this release to satisfy five bands, let alone New Jersey's native sons. This album is both screechingly abrasive, as evident on "Clip the ...

| | Dillinger Escape Plan Irony Is A Dead Scene CD (2002) Extended Play
Under The Running Board music CDs
$8.85 When Dillinger Escape Plan opened for Mike Patton's Mr. Bungle in 1999, the show was a dream for fans of experimental metal. When a break between vocalists allowed Dillinger Escape Plan to seek out a collaborator to fill the time, Patton seemed like an inspired choice to mix up their assault. Despite the ridiculously high expectations from both artists' fan bases, Irony Is a Dead Scene is a brilliant collaboration between the two. Coming off as a challenge to the stale rap metal scene that often sites Patton as an influence, it's hard not to view this as the natural progression of Faith No More's King for a Day... sound. Dillinger Escape Plan builds mountains of molten guitar riffs and eerie sound effects into an angular landscape of complex ideas, just to let Patton pull the whole thing together with his multi-faceted croon. One only needs to hear the Mel Blanc-meets-Ian MacKaye jabbering on "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things" to understand how brilliant he can be on the microphone, and if that doesn't convince listeners, then maybe the falsetto breakdown or grizzled rap found later in the song can do the job. The songwriting here is truly inspired, displaying the prodigious chops of Dillinger better than anything they've done since Calculating Infinity. It would be impossible to cite all the genres covered in the 18 minutes of music here, but this band has truly earned its standing as the ...

| | Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine CD (2004)
Under The Running Board album
$11.89 Released almost two years after Dillinger Escape Plan's previous recording, IRONY IS A DEAD SCENE (featuring guest singer Mike Patton of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle fame), MISS MACHINE finds the band sporting a new vocalist, but still offers the same incredibly complex mix of heavy metal, hardcore, avant-garde jazz, and progressive rock. Sounding at once more abrasive and more accessible, the New Jersey quintet takes the art-rock innovations of Shudder to Think and adds ...
| | Haunted Dead Eye CD (2006) Bonus DVD; Bonus Tracks; Collector's Edition
Under The Running Board CD music
$15.65 The return of original vocalist Peter Dolving before the Haunted's fourth album, rEVOLVEr, coincided with the respected Swedish metal band's first deliberate effort to break out of their heretofore self-imposed neo-thrash metal boundaries. But for those unadventurous fans who already bristled at that album's tentative forays "out of the box," their 2006 follow-up, The Dead Eye, may sound tantamount to stylistic treason. Here, token samples of the group's once dominant brisk thrashers (instantly recognizable thanks to their fast-picked notes, originating with Anders and Jonas Bjorler's legendary prequel band, At the Gates) like "The Medication," "The Shifter" and "The Stain" are exceptions, not the rule -- mere olive branches extended out of pity to those obstinate fans. The remainder of The Dead Eye (whose every track title stars with a "the" for some reason) finds the band trafficking in a variety of slower tempos (both "The Drowning" and "The Guilt Trip" get seriously doomy), experimenting with novel guitar textures (hear notions of Meshuggah, the Deftones and Isis in "The Cynic" and "The Failure"), and cutting Dolving loose to try ...
