Black Sabbath: Tony Martin (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Neil Murray (bass); Cozy Powell (drums). Additional personnel: Geoff Nicholls (keyboards). Gothic in approach, but crushing guitar riffs galore, TYR followed Black Sabbath's previous return to the spotlight by less than a year. Again leaning heavily on the darker side of life, or perhaps, death, TYR is a set of tunes loosely based around the Norse tales of Odin and the gods of war. "Valhalla" is unlike anything the old Sabbath tried, yet still sounds familiar. "The Sabbath Stones" mix myth with metal in a crushing display of musical synthesis. With TYR, Black Sabbath sound as serious as can be. ~ James Chrispell A more focused group effort than the previous ETERNAL IDOL, TYR features lyrics written by vocalist Tony Martin, with music by the whole band. Tony Iommi is still the ringmaster of the Sabbath circus, though, as his riffs power this heavy metal concept album. The title character is identified as the "son of Odin and the supreme sky-god of the northern peoples; the god of war and martial valor." Sabbath stalwart Geoff Nicholls' keyboards create an eerie atmosphere on TYR. Hard rock veterans Cozy Powell (drums) and Neil Murray (bass) provide a more than ample rhythm section. Tony Martin's vocal range is reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio, while Tony Iommi's constantly evolving guitar playing is as tight as ever. He is THE heavy metal axe-grinder for the ages, influencing the genre's top names. TYR's heavy yet melodic sound is impressive, and plays a notable role in the history of a monumental group. | Tyr Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews lupus Great album - it's not only the best of the Martin-era, it's one of the best Sabbath albums of all time. I personally think it's much better than anything they've done with Dio (even Heaven and Hell) and most Osbourne albums (except Paranoid, Master of Reality & Sabbath Bloody Sabbath). only 1 thing: why aren't there more songs on it???? Perhaps the best of the Martin era... I was surprised, when I got this album home, at how good it is. This is perhaps the best Tony Martin era Sabbath album, every song is good, the weakest track being #8 "feels good to me' but it's a good song too. I see many reviews claiming Cross purposes is the best of the Martin era-not in my opinion, I prefer the fantasy themes. This is a great album through and through, beginning to end. I think maybe Hammerfall owes a lot to Sabbath as well as Maiden...TYR ROCKS. Submitted by Dan (Calhoun, Ga, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Divinely Awesome Riding on the crest of the wave built up by the seductively evil 'Headless Cross' of '89, and the simmering anger of 'The Eternal Idol' of '87, 1990's 'Tyr' cemented the Martin-era Black Sabbath as a vital and influential force in late-80's heavy metal.
Exploring the interlinked themes of religion, faith, truth and justice, Sabbath create an album whose general theme is, that being faithful and true to yourself - or whatever God you believe in - can get you through whatever test life throws at you - even death.
Musically, i scratch my head trying to think of another band from that period which played so tightly and ferociously, but at the same time full of melody and beauty.

A Gothic Masterpiece! I rate TYR alongside Vol 4 and Heaven and Hell as one of my favourite Sabbath CDs. The title and cover art say it all and there's nothing more fitting to listen to when you are walking through the old graveyards and castles of Britain than this. The musicianship is superb and it's perhaps Cozy Powell's finest moment outside of his years with Rainbow. This version of Black Sabbath are the Gods of Gothic Thunder indeed! Tyr
$14.19 Personnel: Lita Ford (vocals, guitar); Stet Howland (drums). Audio Mixer: Jeremy Mackenzie. Photographer: Piggy D. Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest track), "Bed," was released exclusively to Stockroom.com, ...
