For those who've lived under a rock for almost 50 years, this review will mean less than nothing. The rest of us have no doubt encountered -- on some television program, a commercial for a K-Tel oldies collection, or, in rarer cases, songs floating in the background on a film soundtrack -- Frankie Valli's shattering falsetto fronting his rock and doo wop band, the Four Seasons. As certainly as other artists of the period are known by their ...

| | Pure 60'S: The #1 Hits CD (2002)
Greatest Hits 1966 songs
$11.99 This compilation is just what it says: number one hits on the American charts from the 1960s. It has a leg up on some similar anthologies, though, by virtue of its sheer quantity: 26 songs spanning the entire decade, which is pretty good value for a single CD. While it's true the selection is a little arbitrary, on the whole it's really good, and whether you care about chart statistics or not, it's an excellent disc if you're looking for an all-purpose collection of ...

| | Jorma Whittaker CD (2003)
Greatest Hits 1966 album
$12.49 From the head-in-the-clouds portrait on the album cover to the dreamy piano pop and off-kilter rock within, Jorma Whittaker's self-titled solo debut evokes some not-so-subtle comparisons to John Lennon's Imagine. While the comparisons don't hold up entirely, this album is more in the mode of a confessional, singer\songwriter album than Whittaker's output with Marmoset, although the trippy, droning "Molly Melancholy" would've fit in just fine on Record in Red. The overall sound of Jorma Whittaker also recalls his previous band, especially since Whittaker worked with several former Marmoset members, including LonPaul Ellrich, whose production skills gave Marmoset's albums -- and this one -- a warm, worn-in, slightly odd sound. This sound works equally well on the album's hazily atmospheric songs, such as the slightly creepy "Birds Are Falling Through the Sky," and its more upbeat moments, like the Anglophilic cover of "Man With Money," ...
