| | Arkansas Shout CD
This is an intriguing CD for it features all of the music that the American Record Corporation (ARC) recorded during a field trip to Hot Springs Arkansas in March 1937 other than some gospel performers. The performances (originally released on the Vocalion, Melotone, and Perfect labels) range from big band swing to Western swing and blues. The 28 selections on this generous CD include cuts by the Range Riders (a solid Western swing band with a weak saxophonist), Fats Smith's Rhythm Kings, Three Fifteen & His Squares, the Original Yellowjackets, trumpeter Ike Ragon's Orchestra, Albert Gale's Orchestra, Tommy Settles, and Jazzbo Tommy's Lowlanders. Not all of the selections are of equal quality and some of the styles and songs were already several years behind the times, but overall the music is quite enjoyable. Best are the six selections from the Original Yellowjackets, an excellent no-name nine-piece group that could have gone much further if they had moved up North. Serious early jazz collectors will definitely want this CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Arkansas Shout songs
$18.79 Two different bands have all of their output reissued on this CD. The first dozen selections are by the Arcadia Peacock Orchestra of St. Louis, a pretty decent hot jazz dance band from 1924-1925. None of the sidemen became famous (best known is trumpeter Bob Pope), but the band fares well and on two numbers offers fine support to singer Sophie Tucker. However, the real reason to acquire this disc is for the 14 selections by the Arcadian Serenaders (including two cuts made as the Original Crescent City Jazzers). ...

Arkansas Shout album
$16.49 In 2006, the Jazz Oracle label released a thrilling 25-track collection of recordings that document JAck Teagarden's professional activity during the first grueling months of the Great Depression. Unlike his collaborations with Eddie Condon, these records do not necessarily spotlight Teagarden as soloist or vocalist. 1930 was a banner year in the golden age of squeaky clean crooners and pop vocalists. The music is deliciously dated and heavily arranged, with an innocent charm that is peculiarly reassuring. ...

Eddie South was a talented jazz violinist who never really achieved the fame that he deserved; though he was a contemporary of Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith, most of his work was for radio and films. As a result, relatively few of his recordings have appeared on CD. So the discovery of 16 of ...

$17.75 Gary Kyle I picked up the guitar for one reason, to impress a girl! I had been singing for a while when I decided to take a stab at writing a song for a pretty young lady I was interested in. Just like Bryan Adams said, "I played it till my fingers bled", and it worked. I got the girl, (although I didn't keep her long).I grew up in Kingwood, a suburb of Houston, and in my senior year of high school a friend and I fronted a cross over country band called "Big Billy Bocephus and the Yee Haws". It was that first stage experience that convinced me that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.I started writing ...
