If there must be Christmas albums, and it appears that there must, they may as well be like this one. While Yoakam uses his impressive post-George Jones warble to fine effect on these seasonal ditties, he doesn't take himself too seriously. The ubiquitous "The Christmas Song" is presented here in a campy faux-swing version, of which the song's author, Mel Torme would be proud. "Here Comes Santa Claus" is another bow to the Cocktail Nation, with a loungey rhumba arrangement.
It's not all high spirits, though. The title tune turns out to be a heart-breakingly beautiful torch song easily the equal of anything on Yoakam's "straight" albums. With this batch of yuletide tunes following closely on the heels of UNDER THE COVERS, Yoakam's album of covers, 1997 turned out to be a lean year for fans of Yoakam's songwriting. However, for the faithful, any Dwight is better than none at all.

So this is what it comes to in the 21st century music business. It's where an artist like Gretchen Wilson comes out of nowhere, skyrockets to the top of the charts with her first single "Redneck Woman," which becomes an anthem, sells millions and millions of copies of her debut album, Here for the Party, releases two more fine offerings -- All Jacked Up and One of the Boys (her best) -- and then gets dropped by her label because she can't duplicate her initial success. To be fair, Wilson never had a chance to sell as many records as her debut again; it was an anomaly that plenty of acts have been party to. (Remember the Counting Crows?). Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard.
