En La Habana
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and ...

Some years after the initial collection, this follow-up to the first All Systems Go follows the same method as the original, right down to similar cover art, disc art, and even inlay tray track-listing style (no comments about Garth Brooks being a "puppet asshole" this time around, though). ...

| | Freddie Keppard The Complete Set 1923-1926 CD (2000)
En La Habana
$9.35 For several practical reasons, this could very well be the best Freddie Keppard collection currently available on compact disc. Until someone comes out with an expanded set containing everything even remotely connected with Keppard, this Retrieval edition, unflawed yet arguably not "complete," deserves top recommendation. The art and science of Keppard appreciation has always been filled with challenges. This is because there always seems to be a number of recordings included on which Keppard does not appear or -- even better -- where Keppard's presence has been hotly disputed for generations. The cornerstone reissue predating the rise of digital transfers was a 1979 Smithsonian/CBS LP entitled The Legendary Freddie Keppard -- New Orleans Cornet. That marvelous tribute, covering the years 1924-1926, was garnished with copious liner notes. A 1988 Jazz Treasury LP covering the years 1923-1928 made further material available to collectors. The producers of King Jazz brought out their own version of the chronology in 1992, and a 1998 Jazz Archives edition proved to be a thinly veiled reissue of a 1996 EPM Musique release. These are some of the primary milestones in the study of Freddie Keppard's recorded legacy, and let it be said that the earlier CD editions were marred by serious technical problems. Although grouping together both Keppard's and Louis Armstrong's recordings made with Erskine Tate, the Jazz Archives issue omits three crucial sides by the Jazz Cardinals, which happen to be the only recordings ever actually released under Keppard's name. How they rationalized that excision is anybody's guess. The producers also edited out a magical glockenspiel intro from "Scissor Grinder Joe," and the sound quality is weak enough that some of the subtleties of the performances are lost. The King Jazz edition is ruined by a catastrophic mistake in their discography, as track 23 appears as track 17, causing most of the rest of the printed titles to be out of step with what is actually heard. With ...
| | Jaared Hang Time CD (2002)
En La Habana
$12.59 Earl Carter, Ken Navarro, Peter White (guitar); Lorenzo Sands, Carl Lester-El, Samba Diop (bass); Jay Jay Williams, Kevin "Stixx" Marshall (drums); Eddie Montalvo (percussion).
This elegant and funky follow-up to the saxman's debut Foreward carries the cool vibe of that disc to deeper extremes while also showing a richer diversity in the veteran saxman's artistry. Jaared's chief alto sax influence is David Sanborn, and he's been inspired in recent years by Nelson Rangell. Yet going back further, he's a huge fan of legends like Ace Cannon, Boots Randolph, and Stan Getz. He delves into a bit of fusion and even bebop on "Searchlight." There's a colorful Latin flavor on "Ibizi," written by keyboardist and label founder Marcus Johnson about an island off the coast of Spain (the track features guitarist Ken Navarro). The previous year, Jaared had been doing numerous Midwest and East Coast dates with guitarist Peter White, and this joyful experience is reflected in "Happy Time," a spirited light funk gem featuring the guitarist's trademark acoustic style. While a solid songwriter and producer in his own right, Jaared loves the art of collaboration and on Hangtime hands the production reins to Johnson (who produces five tracks and co-produced another) and Nate Smith (who does four tracks). Johnson's include the heavy grooving "Make It Happen," which was originally written by keyboardist Patrick Cooper as an intro theme to the nationally syndicated, D.C.-based talk show 8101; the lush, Latin-tinged "Ibiza"; a unique, percussive twist on Ambrosia's ...
| | Lenny Breau At The Purple Onion CD (2004)
En La Habana
$13.79 Guitarist Lenny Breau, vocalist/comedian Don Francks, and bassist Eon Henstridge were a brand new trio (later calling themselves Three) when they were recorded in 1961 at the Purple Onion, a Toronto nightclub. While Breau and Francks had worked together over the previous month, Henstridge literally had only about an hour of rehearsal with the others prior to the making of this recording, though the trio's emphasis was more on spontaneity than set arrangements. Although fans of Lenny Breau are likely to be interested in all of his previously unreleased recordings, the focus is primarily on Francks. The trio's approach to standards is a bit unusual. "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top" ...
