| | Dion Return Of The Wanderer/Fire In The Night CD (1978) (Import) United Kingdom
Sings Great Ballads
$16.95 Both of these albums, from 1978 and 1979, respectively, were made with the Streetheart Band, Dion's then-touring outfit. FIRE went unreleased at the time for reasons unaddressed in the CD's liner notes (there aren't any).
Stylistically, the two are pretty much of a piece, although RETURN has a bit of a '70s West Coast studio rock-lite sound (think Linda Ronstadt or the Eagles), while FIRE has mild funk touches and in general attempts to rock out a little more. RETURN has stronger material, by and large; there are excellent covers of Tom Waits' "Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night," and Bob Dylan's "Spanish Harlem ...

| | DJ Cam DJ Kicks CD (2002) (Import) Germany
Sings Great Ballads
$13.69 The Playgroup installment of the DJ-Kicks series acts as an ideal counterpart to the collective's self-titled album, which was released only a few months prior in the U.S. Trevor Jackson, the orchestrator behind Playgroup, more or less unfurls the Playgroup blueprint here, harvesting rarities from Larry Levan's Paradise Garage sets and dishing out picks from the numerous scenes that have taken inspiration from New York City and Chicago clubs of the '80s. Material's fat-bottomed "Ciquri" bleeds into Harlequin 4's version of the hi-hat happy "Set It Off," which dissolves into Impedance's dubby, detached version of "Tainted Love." Random Factor's "Broken Mirror," an anxious blend of synth pop à la Visage ("Fade to Grey") and paranoiac unease à la Rockwell ("Somebody's Watching Me"), floats into Cultural Vibe's "Ma Foom Bey," an early garage staple. While there are stylistic similarities tying everything together, there's a wide range of moods throughout. The sweet bump of Metro Area's "Caught Up" ...

| | Landing Sphere CD (2004)
Sings Great Ballads
$12.49 Landing continue their dreamy atmospherics with Sphere, released by K Records. The one aspect that seems to be a tad different on Sphere is the prevalence of steady drumming on most of the tracks, making Landing less similar to Windy & Carl and a closer kin to Mojave 3, Low, American Analog Set, or even Fontanelle. Landing still definitely lay down their prog-ish and psychedelic space-gaze tendencies on Sphere, but also enter into a post-rock/experimental area, as on "Fluency ...
| | Philip Catherine Meeting Colours CD (2005) (Import) France
Sings Great Ballads
$15.79 Philip Catherine is an eclectic guitarist, comfortable within tradition, but just as comfortable fusing tradition with newer elements. On Meeting Colours, he's joined by quite a large orchestra to interpret ten of his pieces (two compositions receive more than one treatment) and Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." The multiple flutes and saxophones create a big sound that ranges from grand to silky smooth, working in tandem with Catherine and trumpeter Bert Joris' leads. The large assembly also leaves ample room for subtly complex arrangements with trombones, trumpets, and clarinets. Catherine's compositions also offer intriguing nuances, as with the opening of "Happy Tears," allowing for changes in tempo and mood. The performance of compositions like "Pink Circus" and "On the Ground" are tastefully subdued, and Catherine's lead work weaves smoothly into the overall structure. ...
