| | Louis Jordan 1944-1945 CD Louis Jordan Discography of CDs
Part of Circle Records' chronological reissue of all of Louis Jordan's released masters, the 24-track compilation 1944-45 covers the very beginning of Louis Jordan's golden age. Though most of Jordan's most famous songs were written and recorded in the late '40s, Jordan's jump blues aesthetic was already fully formed. Although Jordan was mistakenly lumped in with the swing era during the short-lived swing revival of the late '90s, his raucous, R&B-influenced jump blues style is a somewhat later development. Think of Louis Jordan as the missing link between swing and early rock and roll. On the other hand, one doesn't have much time to think when this disc is playing; there's too much dancing to be done. Highlights include the classics "Five Guys Named Moe" and "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby," both of which would become Jordan's signature tunes, and the sassy "I Like 'Em Fat Like That."

$14.49 "Session" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
In one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of recent years, Linkin Park maintains its position at the top of the nu-metal heap with METEORA. The band labored carefully over their craft; for instance, the writing process of leadoff single "Somewhere I Belong" spawned 30 finished choruses before vocalists Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington arrived at the version found on the album. The combination of Shinoda's raps and Bennington's sing/scream vocals makes for an altogether complementary approach, best evidenced in "Faint" and "Easier To Run."
The pressure felt by Linkin Park to meet a high standard with their sophomore release even finds it's way into the lyrics of "Nobody's Listening," where self-doubt and fear are almost all-consuming. ...
| | Best Of The Charioteers CD (2003)
1944-1945
$13.39 This is the very first CD to feature the 1930-1940's vocal group the Charioteers. The Best Of The Charioteers (2003) presents two-dozen tracks spanning over a decade during their stint with Columbia, and the related Vocalion and Okeh labels. The quintet's sublime blend was led by Billy Williams (tenor), who would go on to have a well-received solo career as well. In addition to the sides featured on this compilation, The Charioteers would also become known for backing up other pop vocalists such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. The group was promoted to tap into the success of the Ink Spots, who were on the rival Decca Records label. While not compiled extensively in this collection, the Charioteers rich musical heritage also includes a significant and concurrently successful stint on the gospel circuit. One listen will reveal the profound influence that these sides had as definite precursors to both 1950's doo wop and ultimately modern R&B. The scope of material ranges from the fun, uptempo romps "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans"; ...
| | Dream Evil Book Of Heavy Metal CD (2004) Bonus DVD; Enhanced CD
1944-1945
$14.35 Dream Evil's third album, Book of Heavy Metal, is a brazen tribute to this always controversial genre -- as likely to invoke blind devotion from its fans as it does outright dismissal from its antagonists. In fact, Dream Evil, much like loin-clothed metal warriors Manowar, care not for the latter category of sniveling vermin! No sir, their mission to metalify (is that a word?) the realm is fueled by far grander ambitions and deeper commitments than those non-believers could possibly fathom. Or so one would gather from the meaty staccato riffs, dazzling guitar solos and soaring vocals (everything classic metal is known and loved for) to be found in über-metallic offerings such as "Into the Moonlight," "Crusader's Anthem," and the over-the-top title track, which incidentally begins with vocalist Niklas Isfeldt's ...
