Wyclef Jean serves up another slice of his music and remixing creativity with The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book. Loaded with pop culture commentary and often directly naming social names, The Ecleftic is sure to stir up some emotions from not only the famous, but from the general public as well. The purest example is "Diallo," named after the man who was shot 41 times by patrolling night officers when he reached for his wallet, not a gun as the police had thought. With this, Wyclef shows his refugee camp roots, acting as a 21st century Bob Marley. As much as it is loaded with serious urban observations, Wyclef also serves up a good party and even some love songs. In the beginning, The Ecleftic is loaded with classic and catchy samples, such as the song about his undying love for a stripper paying her way through college entitled "Red Light District." Though older listeners will probably cringe at the thought of Kenny Rogers singing of turntables, this move is no surprise from a man who introduced the Bee Gees to the hip-hop generation with the sample of "Staying Alive" on his album The Carnival. On Ecleftic, Wyclef comes full-fisted with commentary on the police system, urban ills, and stereotypes. Though some are merited, after the first dozen they lose their impact and are swallowed by catchy beats. Overall, another commentary and playfully meticulous production by Wyclef, who has struggled to separate himself from the Fugees. It is clear, with a good retrospective listen, how much Wyclef's production style was a large part of the praised trio. With The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book, Wyclef takes another strong step toward solidifying his own identity. ~ Diana Potts Wyclef Jean's sophomore album ECLEFTIC begins with a phone conversation between label executive Tommy Mottola and him. In the skit, Mottola is yelling for another Fugees album, which has been the sentiment of most Fugees fans--they've been waiting for the trio's follow-up to their multi-platinum album, THE SCORE. Wyclef answers with yet another individual, glowing musical contribution. ECLEFTIC blends a variety of musical influences, mixing reggae, rock, and pop into 'Clef's own brand of hip-hop. He answers the Fugee questions with "Where Fugee At," and addresses political issues with the heartfelt "Diallo." He also stretches hip-hop boundaries by using both the wrestler The Rock on the chorus of "It Doesn't Matter," and country star Kenny Rogers in a skit. If ECLEFTIC doesn't move its listeners, no Fugee album will.

| | Eloy Floating CD (1974) Remastered
Ecleftic
$9.25 Reissue of the German prog rock outfit's third album, originally issued on EMI in 1974. Remastered with 3 previously unreleased tracks 'Future City' (Live), 'Castle In The Air' (Liive) and 'Flying High' (Live). 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
FLOATING is a 1974 release by German prog-rockers Eloy. Remaster adds three extra songs. Issued in 1974, Eloy's third album, FLOATING, is widely considered to be one of the German space-rock band's finest records. While the title track has a frenetic pace that belies its name, "The Light from Deep Darkness" presents meditative moments that serve as counterpoint to the outing's busier passages. An underrated prog classic, FLOATING may not be the most original album of its era, but it captures the style's dynamic shifts and bold ...
| | Diana Ross Motown Anthology CDs (2001)
Ecleftic
$20.89 Personnel includes: Diana Ross, Lionel Richie (vocals). Producers include: Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Deke Richards, Hal Davis, Michael Masser. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Up until this release, consumers had a difficult task of finding a definitive compilation highlighting the post-Supremes career of Diana Ross -- mainly because there wasn't one. This double-disc set gathers 27 of the diva's finest solo sides, plus an additional 11 tracks that are making their domestic debut. As a retrospective, The Motown Anthology succeeds in gathering all of Ross' major singles. Some are available here in a previously unissued form. Such is the case for "Remember Me," "My Mistake (Was to Love You)," and "Lovin' Livin' & Givin'" -- from the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack. Those looking for chart-toppers should note that The Motown Anthology not only delivers rare material, but also all the hits that would render most other collections superfluous. The producers have also hit upon a favorable ratio of hits to rarities. After covering all the bases on the popular and familiar ...
| | Scarface My Homies CDs (1998)
Ecleftic
$20.49 In 2006's MY HOMIES PART 2, Southern gangsta rapper Scarface blends violent ghetto tales like "Southern Nigga" with smartly told vignettes like "My Life," his reunion with the Geto Boys. Scarface may still be too raw for prime time, but when he's got cuts of the caliber of "Definition of Real," his collaboration with Ice-T, and "Never Snitch," where he partners with The Game, it doesn't matter. Scarface was never one of the more consistent hardcore rappers, falling prey to a tendency for cartoonish violence and comic-book gangsta fantasies. As long as his music hit hard, such traits were forgivable. Here he relies on familiar styles, samples, beats, and grooves. Since it follows Untouchable by just a year, it's of a piece with that album. He recycles beats and basslines, and he repeats themes over and over again. Includes the dynamic Master P collaboration "Homies & Thuggs." [A Screwed & Chopped version was also released.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Over-releasing like he was Master P with bills to pay, Scarface didn't even let one month of 2006 pass before he followed the excellent One Hunid with the guest-star-filled My Homies, Pt. 2. To put some confusion to rest, One Hunid was a "Scarface presents" affair -- that is, he was presenting his new crew, the Product -- but it contained much more material from Scarface himself than My Homies, Pt. 2, which looks more like a solo album than it is (longtime fans are less confused, because the original My Homies was also a near-compilation). With that out of the way, My Homies, Pt. 2 is better than its predecessor and would be every reason a Scarface fan needs to celebrate if it didn't draw attention ...
