| | Dream Theater When Dream & Day Unite CD (1989) Germany; Originally Released in 1989
Gonna Get Over You/Te Olvidare songs
$13.95 WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time changes gave the group ...

| | Fatback Band XII CD (1979) (Import) United Kingdom
Gonna Get Over You/Te Olvidare music CDs
$12.59 Fatback maintained the same high standard of quality to produce another impressive slab of funk-tinged disco. XII is notable to hip-hop historians for the track "King Tim III (Personality Jock)," a song often tagged as the first rap song (it was released as a single shortly before the more popular "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang). "King Tim" remains a killer blast of hip-hop, seamlessly mixing a slick old-school rap into the band's intensely funky blend of organ, energetic horn blasts, and a relentless walking bassline. However, this isn't all there is to XII: The album's other tracks present a consistent mix of funky grit and disco slickness. Standout tracks include "Gimme That Sweet, Sweet Lovin'," which layers a Bee Gees-style falsetto vocal ...

| | Robert Palmer Live At Apollo New York CD (1988) (Import)
Gonna Get Over You/Te Olvidare album
$9.99 Robert Palmer concluded six months of touring (most of it in North America, with one month in Japan) in 2000 with the December 15 date at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater recorded for this album. Fronting a six-piece band and accompanied by backup singer B.J. Nelson, he performed a set heavy on his hit material from the second half of the 1980s -- starting with the Power Station's "Some Like It Hot" and including his own most popular songs "Addicted to Love," "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," and "Simply Irresistible." Anyone hoping for earlier tunes had to be satisfied with three items from 1980's Clues, the near-title track "Looking for Clues," "Woke Up Laughing," and the influential "Johnny & Mary," which, Palmer said, "was a big hit for me in Guatemala, believe it or not." Otherwise, the non-single selections mostly came from the million-sellers Riptide (1985) and Heavy Nova (1988), with nothing at all from less-popular later albums Don't Explain (1990), Ridin' High (1992), and ...

| | Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Dust To Gold CD (2000)
Gonna Get Over You/Te Olvidare songs
$12.69 If you've ever been to a religious prayer meeting of any denomination, you'll be familiar with the emotional content of this collection of archive recordings of the master Pakistani qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Devotional, inspirational, at times ecstatic, these songs echo the soulful call and response of Gospel music, the timelessness of ancient Hebrew hymns, and the grittiness of traditional folk music.
Nusrat's tempered, mystical wail predominates, but the shifting rhythms and the complex melodies of the qawwali party (and it certainly sounds like a party) are what drive these ...
