| | Steve Schuch Crossing The Waters CD Steve Schuch Discography of CDs
Difficult to categorize, Crossing the Waters combines subtleties of Celtic and early music with classical undertones and contemporary song structures. Some might call such an aggregate new age, but unlike much of what either rightly or wrongly passes as new age, this music has a pulse and possesses valid melodies which one can actually recall. Musically, there's a lot going on here. The classically trained Steve Schuch plays violin and guitar and composed ten of the 12 pieces on this album. The Night Heron Consort includes the skillful David Surette on guitar and bouzouki and Kent Allyn on fretless bass. The euphonious "Swallows Flight/Black Flies Delight" (in which the entire consort jubilantly performs) and the mournful "Phantom Gypsy" (featuring only Schuch's bluesy violin) are indicative of the extremes and depths found on this recording. Although his classical background is apparent, producer Johnny Cunningham was able to draw enough Celtic underpinnings from Schuch to give Crossing the Waters its rightful classification as "instrumental/Celtic/baroque/classical/gypsy music." ~ Dave Sleger

Crossing The Waters music CDs
$14.69 Ozzy Osbourne may well be ripe for mainstream acclaim as a founding father of heavy metal, but thankfully Bat Head Soup: A Tribute to Ozzy is not one of those increasingly common, cute, and "eclectic" tribute albums where bands and artists are seemingly chosen on the basis of how far away they are, musically, from the honoree. Nor is it -- like Legend of a Madman, Ozzified, and Land of the Wizard, the previous Osbourne tributes -- an attempt by record labels to showcase the no-name acts on their roster. This one gives the Ozzy Osbourne songbook the full-bore, hard rock treatment with a lineup that includes members and ex-members of Ratt, Kiss, Night Ranger, Poison, Slaughter, Twisted Sister, and Judas Priest, to name just a few. There are more guitar heroes, virtuoso bassists, hotshot session drummers, and '80s wild-child screamers in this lineup than you could shake a dead pigeon at. Most of the covers are, by and large, faithful to the originals, if a little too heavy on the guitar pyrotechnics, but that comes with the territory on an album that features Paul Gilbert, Reb Beach, Richie Kotzen, Steve Lukather, George Lynch, Doug Aldrich, Dweezil Zappa, Brad Gillis, and Yngwie Malmsteen. On the one hand, the guitar overkill is what keeps the songs from being note-identical copies of the originals; on the other, it is a tiny bit hard to digest after a point if you're not a shred fan. Speaking of shred fans, the ...

| | Dick Gaughan Redwood Cathedral CD (1998)
Crossing The Waters CD music
$12.05 Gaughan's weathered brogue is enough to make a song memorable. But he also has a knack for gathering fine songs, both originals and covers, that fit beautifully into his style. On this set, Gaughan opens with an understated but powerful "Muir and the Master Builder" by Brian McNeill and even plies his magic with Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty." As he wends his way through a sublime take on Pete Seeger's "Turn, Turn, Turn," it becomes clear that Gaughan has a gift for phrasing that puts the listener at ease. ~ Tim Sheridan
"Although this album does contain two of my own songs, it is primarily an homage by a song interpreter to the craft of the songwriter," writes the estimable Scottish singer/songwriter/guitarist Dick Gaughan in his liner notes for "Redwood Cathedral." "This is basically a collection of songs written by highly skilled songwriters, well-crafted songs I love and which I love singing and exploring." The CD is a wide-ranging musical mosaic of contemporary and traditional-sounding gems by some of the world's best songwriters.Gaughan's ability to take other writers' songs and make them personal statements is amazing. As with many Gaughan recordings, this one mixes songs of political, historical, natural and personal themes, including compositions by Pete Seeger (the timeless "Turn! Turn! Turn!"), Si Kahn ("Gone, Gonna Rise Again"), the late Townes Van Zandt (his classic "Pancho and Lefty"), the Incredible String Band's Robin Williamson ("October Song"), fellow Scot Brian McNeill (founder of the Battlefield Band and a favorite source of Gaughan's cover songs), Ron Kavana, and even a raw, aching reading of the Everly Brothers' tender oldie, "Let It Be Me."Bio:Dick Gaughan is a singer, songwriter and musical interpreter of tremendous depth and passion, often labeled "the Scottish Woody Guthrie." He has one of the finest and most sublime voices on the planet, capable of capturing the heart with the most tender of traditional ballads in one moment and stirring the fire of the spirit with his uncompromising commentary on social injustice in the next. Born in Leith, Scotland, in 1948, Dick Gaughan was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels, both Scots and Irish, which provide the foundation for everything he does. Playing guitar since the age of seven, Gaughan recorded his first of many solo albums in 1971. He was also an early member of the Boys of the Lough, served with the Scottish folk-rock group Five Hand Reel and, in the early '90s, founded the short-lived but extraordinary Clan Alba. Gaughan is deeply committed to fighting social injustice and standing up for the common man in ...

Digitally recorded from the main house P.A., this double disc set captures the '90s era Crimson, the "Double Trio," in a most unique way. The recorded sounds are ...

Crossing The Waters album
$15.75 1997 live album featuring 13 tracks recorded in Holland & Belgium, including covers of 'Who Do You Love' & 'This Wheel's On Fire', plus 'The Devil Made Me Do It'. The cover art is actually a full color slipcase with a full color, two-sided 12' x 16' fold-out lyric sheet inside! An Arcaderelease.
This 1997 follow-up to The Naked Truth repeats the basic "live and acoustic" formula of that album, but it isn't the uninspired retread one might expect. Since the last album used most of the group's familiar numbers, this collection of songs digs deeper into the group's catalog to highlight some lesser-known gems that will delight Golden Earring fanatics. ...
