Like Delmark, Southport has provided a valuable service by documenting talented but obscure Chicago-based jazz artists. In the late 1990s, one such artist was Libby York, who made her recording debut with Blue Gardenia. This CD showed York to be a subtle, relaxed vocalist who was right out of jazz's Cool School. June Christy and Chris Connor are among York's more prominent influences, and the Chicagoan shows herself to be a tasteful interpreter of lyrics on some well known pop standards (including "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "Imagination") as well as Duke Ellington's "I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues" and the 1950s Patti Page hit "Old Cape Cod." York successfully gives the melancholy title song a rare bossa nova makeover, while "Out of This World" receives more of an Afro-Cuban treatment. The singer won't win any awards for being cutting-edge--much of Blue Gardenia could have been recorded 30, 40 or 45 years earlier. But it's a satisfying and likable, if conventional, debut. ~ Alex Henderson

Although they have always had a signature sound (grounded in the heavy, manic, precise, and strange), Fantômas have been fairly adventurous from album to album. So it's a little surprising that -- after hopping from the metal-horror spastics of their debut to an album of film music covers on Director's Cut to Millennium Monsterworks (an almost traditional metal album in collaboration with the Melvins) and, finally, to last year's epic single-track Delirium Cordia -- Fantômas would arrive back at the start. Like their self-titled debut, Suspended Animation is a concept album. The debut was a 30-song soundtrack to a comic book, with each song taking a page number as its title. This disc appears to be the soundtrack to April of 2005, with each song titled after one of the month's 30 days -- which brings us to the monumental artwork that accompanies the CD: a glossy elaborate 30-day calendar illustrated by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. First released in 1991, Sebadoh's III has often been described as the ultimate college rock album. Composed of hit-or-miss musical experiments like "Black Haired Gurl" and lo-fi indie rock like "The Freed Pig," with occasional combinations of both, like their oddball cover of Johnny Mathis's hit "Wonderful, Wonderful," it's perhaps the band's most enduring achievement. This remastered reissue also includes early-'90s demos and rarities, as well as their seminal "Gimme Indie Rock" EP.
