This early compilation of Tampa's work both as soloist and sideman covers a good 20-year period, from his early hokum recordings with Georgia Tom and his jug band to his later sides for Bluebird. Highlights include his liquid slide guitar work behind Jenny Pope on "Whiskey Drinkin' Blues" and when he accompanies the Gospel Camp Meeting Singers on "Hold to His Hand" and "Come and Go to That Land." Unfortunately, the set also suffers from excessively noisy transfers, making some of these rarities much harder to listen to than need be. Some tracks fare better than others, and the set gets better as it moves on chronologically, but you may have to a-b this with other collections to get better-sounding versions of these seminal sides. ~ Cub Koda

| | Little Walter His Best CD (1997)
1928-1946 CD music
$8.15 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica.
With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Fred Below, Walter's own group displayed ...
| | Tommy Castro Hard Believer CD (2009)
1928-1946 music CDs
$14.25 Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator
You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator--and twelfth overall --would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals--a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger--to a rather slick, radio-friendly ...

| | Fats Domino Greatest Hits: Walking To New Orleans CD (2007)
1928-1946 album
$11.39 Following Capitol/EMI's last Fats Domino CD compilation (Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits the Way You Originally Heard Them) by five years, 2007's Greatest Hits: Walking to New Orleans betters that comp in terms of sheer numbers (as it does 1990s My Blue Heaven) by ten tracks and this is a case when more is indeed more. Ten tracks is enough to offer depth, particularly in his earliest sides but also with a couple lesser-known hits from his rock & roll prime, turning this into a joyous overview of one of the greatest musicians of the '50s. It's nice to have this hit the pre-rock ...

| | Giuseppi Logan Quartet CD (1964) Remastered; Digipak
1928-1946 album
$12.79 Free-jazz reed player Giuseppi Logan released only two albums as a leader (both for ESP), before disappearing from the scene in the early 1970s. THE GIUSEPPI LOGAN QUARTET (1964) was Logan's first date; it features the excellent personnel of drummer Milford Graves, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Don Pullen. Logan plays alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute, and Pakistani oboe, and the music is both exploratory and staunchly in the free-jazz realm. Indian sounds and instruments wouldn't become popular until some years later, but Graves's occasional use of tabla on this set gives some of the music a vague South Asian feel.
\"One of the most uncompromisingly \'out\' free jazz records of its time\" -Stewart Mason / All Music GuideOn November 11th, 1964, Giuseppi Logan went to Bell Sound Studios to record his first album for the newly ...
