Famous Duets is a misnomer; while these songs are duets, they're hardly famous -- none of them even charted, and only those with Jean Shepard show any signs of life. ~ Jason Ankeny

Purchase Famous Duets CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ozark Mountain Daredevils Time Warp: The Very Best Of... CD (2000)
Famous Duets album
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California).
Although it omits three songs from the far less comprehensive (and deleted) 1983 12-track Best Of, and doesn't include any live or post-A&M music, this 2000 release stands as the final word on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' career. Cherry-picking 21 tunes from their five studio album stint circa 1974-1978 -- with the lion's share coming from their first three albums and only three selections from the final two -- this is pretty much all you'll need from the under-recognized band that worked in the '70s country-rock shadows of Poco and Firefall, but weren't as dependable or pop savvy as either. In fact, their biggest hit, the Hall & Oates, blue-eyed soul-styled "Jackie Blue," was so atypical of the band's characteristically down-home approach that it ultimately may have been more damaging to their career than if they had clicked with a song more representative of their crisp, rural country pop/rock. As enjoyable and pleasantly organic as they were, the group lacked a distinctive vocalist, direction, and most importantly great songs. This collection focuses on their ...
| | 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Burl Ives CD (2001)
Famous Duets CD music
$7.95 Recorded between 1945 and 1964. Includes liner notes by Joseph Laredo.
Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California).
MCA/Decca's full-priced 18-track Burl Ives collection Greatest Hits, released in 1996, was still in print when the label issued this 12-track budget set five years later, so it's worth comparing the two. The less-expensive album actually contains a couple of big hits -- Ives' Top 40 pop/Top Ten country cover of Hank Thompson's "Wild Side of Life" from 1952 and the 1962 single "Mary Ann Regrets," which went Top 40 pop and Top 20 country and easy listening -- not featured on the more expensive one. In fact, there is an overlap of only seven tracks between the two albums. On the whole, Greatest Hits is the preferable compilation, boasting roughly chronological sequencing and including some minor chart entries not featured on the new album, as well as licensing the Top Ten pop hit "On Top of Old Smoky" from Columbia Records. But 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection: The Best of Burl Ives (despite the hopelessly ungainly ...

| | Ozark Mountain Daredevils It'll Shine When It Shines CD (1974)
Famous Duets songs
$13.39 Following the success of their self-titled debut, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' sophomore release, It'll Shine When It Shines, continues on their already established path of California-style country-rock. This release contained what would ultimately prove to be their greatest hit, "Jackie Blue," which ended up peaking at number three on the pop chart. Although "Jackie Blue" is by far the least countrified track on the album, it embodies the casual, understated groove of the band that could be found on any of the Daredevils' releases. Although when examined closely the album is really three neatly separate albums by three maturing songwriters (John Dillon, Steve Cash, and the underrated Larry Lee), the thread of their relaxed atmosphere and light harmonies runs throughout the album, binding it together as a ...
| | Omar & The Howlers Muddy Springs Road CD (1995)
Famous Duets album
$8.89 Muddy Springs Road, originally released in 1995 on Watermelon Records, was the album in which Omar Kent Dykes finally started putting everything together, opening up his sound with additional players, including harmonica ace Gary Primich and session drummer George Rains, while at the same time reining in his vocal excesses and writing solid, autobiographical songs like the two that lead off this album, "Muddy Springs Road" and "Black Bottom." Both songs draw on Dykes' childhood impressions growing up in McComb, MS, and both give off an ominous, swampy glow that gains emotional nuance from Dykes' gruff, raspy vocals, which sound at times like Wolfman Jack fronting a blues band -- which isn't a bad thing at all. Unfortunately, the rest of the album, with the exception of the Bo Diddley pastiche "Hoo Doo Ball," doesn't carry the same kind of emotional ...

| | Hazel Dickens Few Old Memories CD (1987)
Famous Duets music CDs
$12.65 Few Old Memories collects highlights from Hazel Dickens' early '80s albums for Rounder Records. Like the original studio albums, the compilation balances excellent renditions of standards with new songs written in the same vein. Consequently, Few Old Memories is a terrific overview of Dickens' old timey revival and a good introduction to her surprisingly influential career. ~ Thom Owens
