These 16 tracks, originally released on Crescent and acquired, remastered, and re-released here by Good Time Jazz, date from the Ertegun period. On one hand, these performances are a slice of history, especially the old-time tunes like "Oh! Didn't He Ramble" and Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," allowing the listener to step back to an era when jazz was just finding its voice. On the other hand, with its clear production and masterful performances by Ory and company, this vital, exciting music stacks up against anything in the canon.

After helping usher in New Orleans jazz during the early 20th century, Kid Ory disappeared from the scene altogether in the 1930s. Fortunately for the world, Ory returned in the '40s with a vengeance, and continued making some of the finest classic jazz around, lodging it forever in the public imagination. When producer and jazz critic Nesuhi Ertegun started Crescent Records in the mid-'40s, he first recorded an all-star New Orleans ensemble that included Ory on trombone (when Ory was just beginning to make his comeback).
Personnel: Kid Ory, Mutt Carey, Omer Simeon, Buster Wilson, Bud Scott, Ed Garland, Alton Redd, Minor Hall, Darnell Howard.

Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band: 1944 - 1945 The Legendary Crescent Recording Sessions songs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real ...

| | Linda Tate We Belong Together CD (1996)
Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band: 1944 - 1945 The Legendary Crescent Recording Sessions songs
$12.95 Southport Records has often been great about turning the spotlight on talented Chicago jazz artists who were little known outside of their city. In 1996, one such artist was Linda Tate, an expressive and charming singer whose main influences include Sarah Vaughan and Dianne Reeves. Although Tate hasn't escaped the influence of R&B and pop, We Belong Together is a jazz CD first and foremost. This CD contains a few warhorses that have been recorded countless times (including "You'd Be So Nice ...
