Holiday Favorites album
$14.19 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer ...

Holiday Favorites music CDs
$17.69 A leading light in the somewhat curious world of Hawaiian reggae, Butch Helemano is a smooth singer and a talented songwriter who sometimes errs just a bit too far on the side of slick production and whose lyrics sometimes come across as just a bit prefabricated, but even at his most banal, Helemano knows how to put his sunny grooves and effortlessly catchy melodies across. On Reggae Soul he spends most of his time in a sort of digital-roots mode, flirting with hip hop beats and sound effects on "You're the Only One" but keeping things dour and dread on the minor-key anthem "Roots and Culture." There's plenty of his signature lovers rock as well, as exemplified by the soulful "Love Me Now" and the nicely funky "Come Along." Less effective is the galloping ska of "It's Alright," which comes across as a weak tribute to the glory days of Studio One. He's not changing the face of reggae music, but you can always count on Butch Helemano to provide some pleasant listening for a summer night on the beach. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Running Red Lights Enter The Tide CD (2008)
Holiday Favorites album
$16.45 In October of 2005 a band formed and rehearsed without any material, a drummer playing percussion on a laundry bin and a hand-cart, and a lead vocalist singing vocals through a practice amplifier and a karaoke microphone. One and a half years later, relying on their love of music, friendship, and an explosion of musical creativity, that same band has created something truly unique. You only need to listen to a single track on their debut album Enter the Tide to feel the emotion and energy behind the music of Running Red Lights. The music from Enter the Tide is intense from start to finish. Beginning with the blaring riff of 'Last Call' the album never loses momentum. Highlighted by anthemic tracks like 'Someday,' and 'Influence,' the album is riveted with endless hooks and music that will be stuck in the listener's head for days. Enter the Tide reaches its emotional peak with the track 'Addiction,' written about an old friend lost to a drug overdose. Listening to this album from start to finish is truly a memorable experience. Consisting of 4 New Jersey natives Greg Townsend (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Lemezis (lead guitar), ...
| | Colin Of Arabia Pain Machines CD (2009)
Holiday Favorites CD music
$9.79 This handy CD summarizes the career of Colin of Arabia to date: four tracks from a single; their half of three different split EPs; and one compilation track; plus a heap of live tracks, including many songs not featured in studio versions. Colin of Arabia's brand of hardcore has a slightly punkier edge than that played by most of their more metal-minded brethren. These guys really sound like they could have been playing shows at CBGB in the brief window between the 1,000-mph Minor Threat/Bad Brains/MDC years and the rise of N.Y.C. bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of It All, Gorilla Biscuits, et al. Their gang-shouted ...
