| | Dream Theater Train Of Thought CD (2003)
(Mutate) album
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long ...
| | Savatage Hall Of The Mountain King CD (1987)
(Mutate) CD music
$8.39 With band members, critics, and fans unhappy with the commercialism of Fight for the Rock, Savatage began to disintegrate. However the new found acquaintance of producer Paul O'Neill not only changed the group's fortunes but soon pointed them in new directions. O'Neill, who was looking for a metal band to record some of his musical ideas, agreed to produce the group's next album, which became Hall of the Mountain King. A return to the form of Dungeons Are Calling, Hall of the Mountain King was the great ...
| | Michael CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
(Mutate) music CDs
$6.09 The soundtrack to MICHAEL is sort of a followup to the phenomenally successful PHENOMENON soundtrack, which came out five months earlier. Both movies starred John Travolta as agents of God, and both soundtracks feature a mix of old and new "adult alternative" artists.
John Hiatt, covered by Jewel on PHENOMENON, is represented once again, this time by Don Henley covering ...
| | Michael Manring Controlled By Radar CDs (2002)
(Mutate) songs
$14.65 Like Kiss the Frog, McGill Manring Stevens is a fusion supergroup comprised of players who kept encountering each other at gigs and session dates before deciding to join forces. Comprised of bassist Michael Manring, guitarist Scott McGill, and drummer Vic Stevens, the band's second album, Controlled by Radar, is a sprawling two-disc affair. Organized into two discs -- one electric ("right brain") and one acoustic ("left brain") -- the music dives and turns all over the map, held together only by their virtuosity. Occasionally, the fretless bass, swirling guitars, classical-style acoustic guitar, and new agey textures become a little too light, but -- for the most part -- the band keeps things quite interesting over the discs' 22 tracks. ~ Jesse Jarnow

| | Arch Enemy Black Earth CDs (1996) Import
(Mutate) album
$33.75 Asian version features the bonus tracks "Losing Faith", "The Ides Of March", and "Aces High".
Reissues can be quite revealing when a band has been around for a decade or more. A reissue might demonstrate that a band's sound has pretty much stayed the same over the years, or it might make the listener say, "You know, this band has done a lot of evolving since this album was recorded." Arch Enemy's debut album, Black Earth (which was recorded in 1996 and reissued in the United States by Regain in 2007), is definitely an example of the latter. Between 1996 and 2007, Arch Enemy experienced some lineup changes, and their approach became increasingly polished along the way. That isn't to say that Black Earth is not well played or short on chops, only that Arch Enemy favored more rawness in the beginning. Arch Enemy's 1996 lineup -- Michael ...

| | Baxter Dury Floor Show CD (2005) Import
(Mutate) music CDs
$16.35 FLOOR SHOW is Baxter Dury's follow-up to his debut album LEN PARROTT'S MEMORIAL LIFT. As the son of rock icon Ian Dury, Baxter has some big shoes to the fill, but the eclectic, powerful, dreamy, and consistently strong music here proves that he is quite capable of doing so.
Well, yes, he's Ian's son, and yes, he was the little moppet standing next to his dad on the cover of New Boots and Panties!!, and for that matter, yes, his songwriting partner Ben Gallagher is the son of Blockheads mainstay Mickey Gallagher. But Baxter Dury is no Frank Sinatra, Jr., nor even a Julian Lennon: sometimes a vocal inflection sounds a bit familiar, but in every important way, Baxter Dury is his own man, a gifted singer and songwriter working in an entirely different musical style from his old man's good-humored blend of pub rock, music hall, and funk. Baxter Dury favors a more modern strain of indie Britpop, with hints of mid-'90s mainstays like the Verve and Suede. The backbone of his band throughout Floor Show is guitarist Mike Mooney and drummer Damon Reece, whose previous work with space rock luminaries like Julian Cope and Spiritualized gives the album an agreeably psychedelic flair ...
