Clarinetist Barney Bigard's final recording (cut four years before his death) is perhaps more notable for the name of his group and the cover drawing (of three pelicans playing jazz) than it is for the music. The performances of mostly swing standards (along with three standards) is fine, but the group (consisting of Bigard, pianist Duke Burrell and drummer Barry Martyn) would have certainly benefited from the inclusion of a bassist, while the three vocals (two by Burrell and one by Martyn) do not help much. In general, Bigard is in good form and, despite the lack of any real adventure, the music is pleasing and swinging. ~ Scott Yanow
the great New Orleans clarinetist from Duke Ellington Orchestra, one of his last recordings, 12 tracks

| | Deke Leonard's Iceberg Iceberg CD (2005)
And The Pelican Trio
$15.55 Though known mostly as a guitarist for Man, Deke Leonard also did some work on his own in the 1970s, sometimes as the head of Deke Leonard's Iceberg. Wireless collects previously unreleased recordings he made for radio during the decade, the first seven tracks coming from European broadcasts of Deke Leonard's Iceberg between 1972 and 1974 (the exact dates and locations are not known), the final four from a BBC John Peel session in February 1978. The 1972-1974 material is an awkward, and not too pleasing, mix of boogified bluesy rock with some art rock brush strokes, not helped by the dull sound (though the fidelity is basically of studio standard). Particularly due to some pointed, quizzical circular guitar riffs, there's sometimes the strange feeling that you're hearing a blues-oriented bar band trying to be Yes, or vice versa. It's not the most inviting combination, and when you throw in the thin vocals of limited power, you have music that even lovers of '70s hard rock/blues-rock blends might seldom dig out of the archive. Leonard plays it much ...

And The Pelican Trio
$15.19 One of the many branches extending from the Broken Social Scene tree, Apostle of Hustle is essentially vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Whiteman and a loose cadre of fellow BSS-affiliated Canadian musicians. Mixing laid-back indie-folk tendencies with a keen sense of songcraft (see the oddball pop of "My Sword Hand's Anger"), Whiteman has a created a charming album that will likely appeal to fans of the mellower, lo-fi side of the Broken Social Scene collective.
Recording information: Andrew's Bedroom, Toronto, CA (12/2005-09/2006); Masterkut, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (12/2005-09/2006); The Party, Monocentre, Canada (12/2005-09/2006).
