Tina Arena's slow-developing international career must be a source of frustration to Sony Music. Given the pop singer/songwriter's success in her native Australia, where In Deep, her second Epic album, became a number one hit upon its release in August 1997, the obvious plan is to turn her into a down-under Celine Dion. In that pursuit, this American reconfiguration has added "If I Was a River," written by Diane Warren (who wrote Dion's "Because You Loved Me") and produced by Walter Afanasieff, who also produces Dion and Mariah Carey, as well as a duet with Marc Anthony on "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You," written by James Horner and Will Jennings (who wrote Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"). The album was produced in typically gargantuan fashion by Jim Steinman, and "Lifetime" was used in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro. Actually, Arena is not the next Dion, and she doesn't need this kind of high-powered help. Her own songs, co-written with a team of others, are perfectly good contemporary pop/rock, and she sings them with passionate commitment. The six songs produced by Foreigner's Mick Jones have a harder rock edge (not surprisingly), notably a cover of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," but the four produced by David Tyson can rock out, too. Nevertheless, Arena is not distinctive enough a singer or songwriter to break through on her recordings alone. If she wants American success, she will have to work for it. On the one hand, the U.S. market has never been so open to female performers; on the other hand, there's a glut of them. In Deep is brimming with potential hit singles (it spawned three in Australia), but it had no commercial impact upon release in the U.S., which must be considered a disappointment after the modest American success of her Epic debut, Don't Ask, in 1996. ~ William Ruhlmann

Almost out of nowhere, brother-sister duo Anointed returned to the gospel and CCM scenes with Now Is the Time, their sixth album and first for Columbia Records. Nobody was expecting a comeback, especially after four years of inactivity following their departure from longtime label Word Records, personnel changes, and a shifting artistic identity that constantly saw them teetering between soaring adult contemporary and urbanized contemporary gospel. Now Is the Time is no different in this regard, picking up right where 2001's ultra-modern If We Pray left off, but adding a more genuinely gospel element than they attained during their Word years. One need not look further than the rousing "Gonna Lift Your Name" and the cover of Andraé Crouch's "Jesus Is Lord" (featuring Crouch himself) to notice that Anointed can have church when it wants to, which hasn't been the case for a great part of their career. After a brief prison term for assault, Styles's label drama began, and he chose to go the mixtape route, recording three while Interscope put TIME IS MONEY on the back burner. Nearly two years after its first single came out, the Lox's most laidback crew member's sophomore album finally arrived to smash the world. With his measured cadences, sly one-liners, and understated intensity, Styles P once again proves he can display all the lyrical power of the most amped-up rhyme spitter without losing his cool. Tight production comes courtesy of Havoc, Lil Jon, Rashad, Hi-Tek, and the Alchemist, while the guest list features Talib Kweli, Jae Hood, Jadakiss, Sheek Louch, Akon, and Marsha of Floetry.
While the title became more and more ironic with every pushed-back release date, Styles P's long-delayed Time Is Money feels immediate, like an excellent mixtape with extremely high production values, and certainly not what you'd expect from a "four years in the making" album. This vital slab of street music pops from the get-go with "G-Joint," a vicious stab at rival gangs -- G-Unit included -- with producer Huu Banga crunching a sample of Asia's "Only Time Will Tell" into an amazingly fresh loop. Old-school soul -- with Talib Kweli and Gerald LeVert stopping by for some worthwhile collaborations -- dominates the next three cuts, then Styles' old crew the LOX appear and the radio-friendly section of the album begins. T.I.'s favorite Crystal Waters loop is featured on "Favorite Drug" and Akon adds his usual hooks and swagger to "Can You Believe It," and while it's been a standard exercise in how to make a solid thug album up to this point, "I'm Black" is a different story altogether. As Time Is Money was seeing release, blogs were all over the track claiming radio wouldn't touch it, then radio claimed they weren't shipping it.
