Clarinetist Kenny Davern is always consistent, playing swing and trad standards with creativity and in his own sound within the older pre-bop styles. This swinging trio date with a pair of excellent British jazzmen (pianist Martin Litton and drummer John Petters) holds its own with Davern's better-known sessions. Litton is a fine two-handed pianist who makes the absence of a string bass irrelevant, while Petters is tasteful in support of the lead voices. Davern shows off his remarkable ease with high notes on "Black and Blue" and is in fine form on such numbers as "You're Lucky to Me," "Willie the Weeper," "Sometimes I'm Happy," and "Dinah." This CD is easily recommended to fans of the idiom and swinging clarinet. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Kenny Davern Big Three CD music
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse ...

Kenny Davern Big Three album
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy interpretation of "But Beautiful," while Wess will melt any heart with his gorgeous flute solo. ...

$13.29 Recorded live at Whisky A Go-Go, Hollywood, California; Golden Bear, Huntington Beach, California; New Penelope, Montreal, Canada; JD's, Tempe, Arizona between 1966 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Dick Shurman.
These are live recordings made between 1966 and '67, captured on portable home recorders by keyboardist Mark Naftalin. The selections are split pretty much evenly between the group's five-piece EAST-WEST incarnation (with guitar hero Mike Bloomfield) and the later big band with horns featured on THE RESURRECTION OF PIGBOY CRABSHAW.
Some of the songs, such as "Born in Chicago," and "Mystery Train," are album favorites, others, such as the long bluesy title ...
