Tony Parenti And His New Orleanians album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in ...
| | Milt Hinton Here Swings The Judge CD (1975)
Tony Parenti And His New Orleanians CD music
$12.09 Milt Hinton was probably the most recorded bassist in the history of music as a whole, but relatively few recordings were released under his own name. This LP was his first as a leader (if you don't count an earlier duo LP with Jo Jones) and it consists of private recordings that Hinton made with tenor saxophone great Ben Webster prior to Webster's departure for Europe in 1964; the remaining tracks come from a Harry Lim-produced studio session featuring Budd Johnson, Frank Wess, Jon Faddis, John Bunch, and Jo Jones. Although the sessions by Hinton and Webster are informal in nature, they are very rewarding. Their duo performance of "Sophisticated Lady" takes on a new degree of subtlety compared to Webster's better-known recordings of this masterpiece by Duke Ellington. Their take of "All the Things You Are" picks up the pace quite a bit, featuring ...

| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert CD (1960)
Tony Parenti And His New Orleanians CD music
$10.55 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed ...

| | Paul Taylor On The Horn CD (1995)
Tony Parenti And His New Orleanians songs
$10.69 It's an unwritten rule in smooth jazz that within every great sideman there is a solo artist itching to emerge, and saxman Paul Taylor -- who's added soulful spark and texture to Keiko Matsui's live band for several years -- makes the most of his first big moment alone on the horn. Keiko's producer and husband Kazu has helmed projects for a dashing handful of some of the genre's most exciting artists in recent years (most notably Porcupine), but he has never before elicited the volatile mixture of smoldering soul and passion he pulls out of Taylor. First and foremost, he directs Taylor's walloping soprano and alto sweeps through ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Best Of The Concert Years: Trios & Quartets From The Great Jazz At The Philharmonic Concerts CD (2003)
Tony Parenti And His New Orleanians album
$9.65 Here is an intelligently sequenced compilation covering recordings that the great jazz singer made over a 30-year span for Norman Granz. Instead of the expected hodgepodge of tracks frantically jumping around from one concert to another, Pablo's Fantasy custodians wrap up things in four extended sequences, one from each decade. First are a pair of numbers in the acoustically suspect Santa Monica Civic Auditorium circa 1972 ("Night and Day," "Little White Lies"), where Fitzgerald has a wobble in her voice but never stops swinging for a second with the Tommy Flanagan Trio. Then it doubles back to a JATP gig in Tokyo in 1953, and a younger, smoother, almost bel canto Fitzgerald -- then still under contract to pop-minded Decca -- emerges in "Body and Soul" and "My Funny Valentine." But ...
