The most popular form of jazz in the '60s was not avant-garde or even hard bop, but soul jazz. The organ groups (which usually featured guitar, tenor and drums) emphasized blues, ballads and soulful renditions of standards. Guitarist Randy Caldwell revives that style in lively fashion for this CD. Joined by the underrated but talented organist, Gene Ludwig, Lou Stellute on tenor and flute, and either Don Williams, Dan Muchoney or Sylvester Goshay on drums, Caldwell explores some fairly advanced material for the idiom. The repertoire consists of John Coltrane's "Impressions," the veteran standard "Where Are You," a pair of Dizzy Gillespie songs ("Con Alma" and "Woody'n You") plus four originals. Caldwell creates music that is both fairly explorative and grooving. It is a particular joy to hear Gene Ludwig in this setting again too. ~ Scott Yanow Randy Caldwell Front Songs Front Review

Purchase Front CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Derek Trucks Already Free CD (2009) (Import) Japan
Front album
$15.29 Derek Trucks started out as a young guitar prodigy playing alongside his uncle Butch in the Allman Brothers Band, but began following his own path in the late 1990s. ALREADY FREE is the result of a decade-plus spent sharpening his skills and growing his soul. It's probably his loosest, warmest, funkiest offering to date. While it's not markedly different from the Southern-tinged blues-rock of his earlier albums, ALREADY FREE nevertheless mines an altogether greasier groove. The album leans heavily on an old-school Southern soul aesthetic, and the spirit of both Memphis and Muscle Shoals can be heard in much of the material here, whether Trucks and company are adding some Southern grit to Bob Dylan's "Down in the Flood" or getting ...
| | J J Cale Naturally CD (1971)
Front CD music
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. A sterling cast of players backs Cale, adding warm tones and light, in-the-cut rhythms. NATURALLY is a perfect introduction to ...
| | Muddy Waters Fathers & Sons CD (1969) Remastered
Front music CDs
$11.99 Recorded in Chicago, Illinois on April 21-23, 1969 and live at the Super Cosmic Joy-Scout Jamboree, Chicago, Illinois on April 24, 1969. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (universal Mastering-West, Hollywood, California)..
The resurgence of Chicago-based blues in the mid- to late 1960s came with an entirely new breed of icons to bear the torch. Among them were the decidedly electric Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Joining Muddy Waters (guitar/vocals) and Otis Spann (piano) on the aptly titled Fathers and Sons are three Butterfield Blues Band alumni: Michael Bloomfield (guitar), Sam Lay (drums), and leader Paul Butterfield (guitar). Further augmenting the personnel is Booker T. and the MG's Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass) and Buddy Miles (drums) -- who cameos during the live "Got My Mojo Workin'" finale. This all-star cast helps reclaim some of Waters' fire, which had been summarily doused on his previous outing Electric Mud -- a tasteless pseudo-psychedelic disaster. The poorly executed scheme had been ...
| | Eric Clapton Riding With The King CD (2000)
Front songs
$10.15 Although Eric Clapton and B.B. King's long friendship originated during a chance meeting and subsequent jam session at New York City's Cafe Au Go Go in 1967, the idea for a collaborative album only crystallized during the sessions for King's 1997 album DEUCES WILD. The resulting record, 2000's RIDING WITH THE KING, is a stellar event, thanks to a wealth of rich material and a solid supporting cast including Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Sample, and Steve Gadd.
B.B. King's extensive catalog provides a wellspring of inspiration, including signature songs such as the smoldering "Three O' Clock Blues," alongside lesser-known numbers like the ribald shuffle "Days Of Old" and the LIVE AT THE REGAL chestnut "Help The Poor." Elsewhere, King and Clapton look to guitarist Big Bill Broonzy (an acoustic "Key to the Highway") and Chicago pianist Maceo Merriweather (the slow-rolling "Worried Life Blues") for inspiration. Even the non-blues numbers are delivered with a rich subtlety befitting these guitar icons' consummate musicianship. ...
| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Front album
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent ...
| | Joanne Shaw Taylor White Sugar CD (2009)
Front CD music
$12.89 She's already being called "the new face of the blues" by the press in her native Britain, but her debut album is the first opportunity most Americans will have to hear Joanne Shaw Taylor's sharp, fiery take on blues-based rock. Opening with the dark and sultry "Going Home," Taylor makes her intentions clear from the very beginning: her sound is raw, funky, and soulful, and she's as likely to reference Jimi Hendrix's R&B-inflected blues-rock as Stevie Ray Vaughan's rock-inflected blues. She's also unwilling to be hemmed in: notice the gorgeous guitar intro on "Just Another Word," and the way that the song goes well outside the lines of traditional blues structure without ...
