| | Tangerine Dream Exit CD (1981)
Misty Mountain Melody album
$7.59 Exit marks the beginning of a new phase in Tangerine Dream's music: Gone were the side-long, sequencer-led journeys, replaced by topical pieces that were more self-contained in scope, more contemporary in sound. Johannes Schmoelling's influence is really felt for the first time here; Tangram, for all its crispness and melody, was simply a refinement of Force Majeure's principles, and the soundtrack to Thief not an album proper. On Exit, listeners are introduced to electronic music's next generation, notably on "Choronzon" and "Network 23," which brought the sound of the dancefloor into the mix (it hasn't left since). That's not to suggest that Tangerine Dream has stopped creating eerie, evocative music; both "Pilots of Purple Twilight" and the stately "Exit" will feel familiar to fans, and the opening "Kiew Mission" is a captivating commentary on nuclear ...

| | Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels CD (1999) Import
Misty Mountain Melody music CDs
$12.79 This soundtrack to the edgy Tarantino-esque British film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels consists largely of vintage punk rock (the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog"), R&B (James Brown's "The Boss" and "The Payback"), and reggae (Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves"), along with a few other oddities, such as Dusty Springfield's rendition of "Spooky," a song that was a hit for the Classics IV in the U.S. The songs are interspersed with obscenity-laced snippets of dialogue from the film that indicate its sarcastic, low-life nature. There's nothing wrong with the music, but minus the film the album is just another random collection of tracks, not cohering as do, say, the soundtracks to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, and The Full Monty (the films to which this one's been compared). ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Reach 454 CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Misty Mountain Melody songs
$6.09 Reach 454 throws its heavy hat into the alt-metal mix with its self-titled debut for Lava/Atlantic. Producer and mixer Jay Baumgardner has processed the band's post-hardcore/heavy alternative sound to the point of no return, with almost every one of the album's 12 songs employing an identical formula. It's a simple one. A ragged, distorted guitar introduces the track's lead riff, and is joined by the rest of the band's impenetrable wall of muddy, almost tuneless sludge. Vocalist Rene Mata seems to have some valid issues to get off his chest, but nothing is articulated beyond buzzwords. "Father," "close your eyes," "breath," "how can I go on?" -- there may be real catharsis in Mata's scratchy vocal cords, but there is nothing to separate his problems from those sung about by his peers in Godsmack, Saliva, and the like. Reach 454 also obviously has the chops to rock -- ex-Sick of It All bassist Rich Cipriano switches to guitar here, and is supported by bassist Dan Martinez and ex-dayinthelife drummer John Kamoosi. But the band's riffing is marginalized by production that sacrifices creativity for convention. It's only when Reach can latch onto a strong melody that the band rises above ...
| | Robert Gass Awakening CD (2003)
Misty Mountain Melody album
$13.25 Robert Gass has always had an ecumenical approach to chant, choosing vocal pieces from a variety of spiritual and cultural traditions. Here he and his choir, On Wings of Song, cover two 14th century Spanish Catholic hymns, a traditional Turkish Sufi chant (that runs through the 99 names of God), a Jewish liturgical chant, Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu chants, The Lord's Prayer, and an alleluia set to Pachelbel's canon.
On Wings of Song has a wholesome, Protestant sound that works best on European numbers like the medieval hymns and the canon. This is a stirring collection of spiritual music, delivered with the utmost sincerity and solemnity.
Digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Recorded at Blue Jay Studio, Carlisle, Massachusetts; Sound Techniques, Boston, Massachusetts and Colorado Sound, Lakewood, Colorado.
Personnel: Robert Gass (chant); Diane Stolar, Danya Gass, Linda Goodman, Krishnabai, Ginny Elkin, Julie Corey, Kimberly Jean Windbiel, John Ford , Bob Goodearl, Robin Scheib, Marvin Barg, Cantor Robbie Solomon, Vijaya Stevenson, Lyra Bessey-Engel, Martha ...
