Birth of an encounterThis encounter between a voice, a text and a composition takes root in the desire of the singer, Fadia El-Hage, to give body, scenically and musically, to a unique voice - simultaneously role, figure and experience. Joëlle Khoury's music will guide this voice bringing out its shades, its sinuous clashes and contours, its tensions, its contradictions, through the writings of a poet. Although Joëlle Khoury's use of this poetry calls for an interpretation, it is already one. The poetry of Jacques Aswad provided Joëlle Khoury with a lingual material in a similar way as the musical material engaged in the compositional process. It is by sometimes going against the grain of the text that she best restituted the 'text effect' as well as its meaning. Joëlle Khoury's compositional relationship to the musical language she 'uses' better translates her interpretation or 'reading' of this poetry...NarrativeIt all starts with a panting breath!In a sort of internal voyage, which resembles a plunge in the windings of a tormented soul, she searches, fleets, goes away, tries to perforate ornaments in the obscurity, to pierce an embrasure in a forest of numbness, to unswathe and decipher her inextricable fetters!Dream she is!Revealed and restituted to herself, in an inspiration - respiration which punctuates the text like an unhesitant 'tremolo', a suspended ritual - revealed in a vision raised like a body out of its mortuary dwelling. Here a bluish vision, no glory, no astonishment. In 'a total, closed, and distant joy', an appeasement, maybe a prayer, completes the discovery of love beyond the relationship, leading to a new relation to the world. The contrast between the apotheosis of the text ending and the twirling roaming musical ending is an example of how Joëlle Khoury treats the non-verbal content of the text, by engaging her musical dialogue with it.Dream she remains!The workThis work retraces a personal experience, the composer's: writing a monodrama over a text in Arabic (her mother language), bringing out resonances of themes such us 'return' and 'acceptation' for the love of reconciliation with the given reality. It is a two-way trip represented in two acts separated by a musical interlude. The first part is more 'atonal', 'rougher' and more torn. The second part hints to a 'tonality' that remains floating, fleeting and hardly determinable; it is more melodious, colored with a passionate untamable love. A tape of 5 minutes plays the role of 'overture' to the piece. This overture, which mixes electronics, various sounds and a human voice - that of the singer, is also divided in two parts. The first part introduces us to the ambiance of the work and presents reality as temporal tie to run through (the Arabic word -aqta'ouhou - means at the same time 'to pass through' and 'to cut'), and ...
