Widely acknowledged as one of Faust's finest works, IV finds these ground-breaking German proggies strutting their collective Euro-stuff on a collection of songs more varied and lighthearted than their previous releases. Starting off with the genre-defining "Krautrock," the band sets up sheets of electronic sound that bounce off each other endlessly, creating a kaleidoscopic feel, while the insistent beat conjures up images of great drooling beasts jumping incessantly up and down. The band steps outside of its comfort zone on "The Sad Skinhead," a loopy reggae sendup. Elsewhere there are quiet, acoustic moments amid the electronic frenzy. "Jennifer" and "It's A Bit Of A Pain," while maintaining the deconstructed feel of the other tunes, are downright poignant.
2006 special issue of the digitally remastered edition of this German progressive rock classic that was originally released in 1973 and a favourite with many fans. This edition adds a bonus CD the features various alternate takes and previously unreleased takes and sessions recorded for the BBC's John Peel, a longtime champion of the group.
Includes liner notes by David Ilic.Spin (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[P]retty awesome -- especially the alternate version of 'Krautrock,' a hypnotic guitar-drone manifesto." Uncut (p.128) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[With] 'Jennifer', a strange tripped-out love song almost unequalled in the annals of psychedelia. A strange, rubbery, reverbed bassline and a gently circling guitar figure conjure a mood of spacey and sacred serenity..." The Wire (p.66) - "FAUST IV is essential, continuing to highlight the group's capacity for shapeshifting and mood swings." Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[P]assages sound beautiful and alien by today's standards..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.153) - "[A] curate's egg of an album...It stands as their most accessible album, containing inspired pieces..." Faust IV album
$12.99 Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of Neu!, or ...
| | Godspeed You Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O. CD (2002)
Faust IV CD music
$12.89 From the bombs dropping on the cover to the slow buildups towards destruction and post-rock beauty in the compositions, this is Godspeed You Black Emperor at its most stripped-down, straightforward, and unsparing. Indie-rock icon Steve Albini produced YANQUI U.X.O., and his trademark extreme dynamics suit this shadowy Canadian collective well, weighing down on the roots of their whisper-to-frenzy style so they can freely branch off into new realms. The opener "09-15-00" departs into twangy, lounge-like territory not out of place for a Sergio Leone-cum-David Lynch nightmare (though it's apparently about Israel). "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls" raises dark towers from shaky foundations of shivery Phillip Glass-style arpeggios, while the lead-heavy drones in "Motherf***er = Redeemer" sink into pools ...
| | Vashti Bunyan Just Another Diamond Day CD (1970)
Faust IV music CDs
$11.45 About five years after briefly surfacing as part of Andrew Loog Oldham's stable, Vashti -- now billing herself with her full name, Vashti Bunyan -- made her only album. A folkier and more serious-minded effort than her initial mid-'60s recordings, it is a pleasing yet overly dainty slice of British rock-tinged folk, produced by Joe Boyd. A certain similarity to some other acts under Boyd's supervision, such as the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention, was assured by contributions from the ISB's Robin Williamson and Fairport's Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol. For good measure, there were string and recorder arrangements by ...

Faust IV songs
$11.99 With 22 tracks, this is no wild, shirtless shout in the moonlight but a sophisticated work of countercultural art that would be right at home as a mind-bending double LP from 1968. The electric-guitar freak-out in "Long Haired Child," ...

| | Bruce Adolphe Tyrannosaurus Sue: A Cretaceous Concerto CD (2006)
Faust IV songs
$12.69 Tyrannosaurus Sue introduces young listeners to the story of dinosaurs as well as the world of concert music. The solo instruments display dazzling virtuosity in their vivid representation of the main characters of the piece – Tyrannosaurus Sue (trombone); a Troodon (clarinet); a Parasaurolophus (bassoon); and a Triceratops (French horn). The final scene is cast as a brief, intense violin concerto that celebrates the ability of humans to discover and remember the past; the solo violin represents the dawn of humanity. The bones of the real Tyrannosaurus rex named Sue are on permanent display in The Field Museum in Chicago. Instrumentation: Oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, percussion, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass.Tyrannosaurus Sue premiered on May 21, 2000 at the Field Museum in Chicago, IL, during the unveiling of Sue, a 67-million year old fossilized dinosaur. Her 5.2-foot skull had 60 teeth, some as long as 12 inches. Although her skull weighed nearly one ton when found, her brain cavity was just big enough to hold a single quart of milk!Duration: 26:27BRUCE ADOLPHE NPR’s comic keyboard quiz-master and creator of Piano Puzzlers, Bruce Adolphe actually spends most of his time writing music in his own style. Whether it’s about a fugitive turkey, a mysterious message from the moon, a teenage T. rex, or a Sarcastic Fringehead fish, Bruce’s music captures the hearts and minds of audiences of all ages. His Tyrannosaurus Sue: A Cretaceous Concerto premiered at The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and was recorded in 2000 by The Chicago Chamber Musicians, and has since been performed by ensembles throughout the US and abroad. Among his other frequently performed works are Red Dogs and Pink Skies: A Musical Celebration of Paul Gauguin; Oceanophony; and two story pieces written ...
