Sing Like Scaffold music CDs
$13.99 Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and self-conscious, and the attempts at comedy are a bit flat, but otherwise this is a near classic. ~ Richie Unterberger
In its original form, the United States of America's self-titled (and sole album) was one of the most exciting and experimental psychedelic albums of the late '60s, blending searingly imaginative electronics with equally unusual songs that were both piercing and dreamy. Although ...

| | Desperate Man Blues Discovering The Roots Desperate Man Blues: Discovering The Roots Of American Music CD (2006)
Sing Like Scaffold CD music
$13.35 In conjunction with the 2006 DVD documentary of record collector Joe Bussard, Dust-to-Digital released this companion CD, featuring 19 tracks in some of the kind of styles -- rural blues, jazz, and old-timey country music, mostly from the '20s and '30s -- that Bussard loves. Desperate Man Blues: Discovering the Roots of American Music isn't exactly a soundtrack to the documentary, since these records are not featured in their entirety in that film. Rather, it's a survey of some of the highlights of the music in which Bussard specializes, the liner notes featuring track-by-track annotation by Bussard himself. It's an excellent mixture of classics by some of the most esteemed early country and blues giants and the kind of more obscure items that are primarily known only to the type of listeners who covet what Bussard collects. Among the classics are Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues," Blind Willie ...

| | Dave Brubeck Jazz At The College Of The Pacific, Vol. 2 CD (1953)
Sing Like Scaffold album
$8.39 In the '50s, Dave Brubeck managed to accomplish something that few post-World War II jazzmen accomplished: He enjoyed a certain amount of acceptance in the pop market. And the interesting thing is that he did it without taking a pop approach -- the pianist played instrumental jazz interpretations of pop songs, but he didn't play pop versions of pop songs. This 2002 release takes listeners back to a time when Brubeck was at the height of his popularity; recorded live on December 14, 1953, most of these previously unreleased performances are from the same concert that gave listeners the first Jazz at the College of the Pacific. Brubeck's quartet includes alto saxophonist ...

Sing Like Scaffold album
$12.79 Not that the band might appreciate the thought, depending, but arguably the cover of Love Is Not Enough is one of the more emo things around -- not only is it a heart (or a cartoon drawing of same) but it features both stitch marks and pins stuck in it. Hopefully they'll never be stuck clunkily namedropped in a Zach Braff movie. All this aside, Blue Skies for Black Hearts' 2006 effort is an amiable enough effort that may ...

| | Dominique Grimaud Les Quatre Directions CD (2008)
Sing Like Scaffold music CDs
$13.25 Les Quatre Directions ("The Four Directions") marks a comeback for French freak rock guru Dominique Grimaud. Surprisingly, it is also one of his finest hours of music. Conceived as a tribute to the Native American tribes that fought well, Les Quatre Directions is a continuous, hour-long piece. In this multi-tracked epic, Grimaud plays several guitars, analog keyboards, drums, and percussion. Interspersed irregularly through the piece are the names of a dozen tribes, spoken by the musician. The quiet floor tom rumbles in the first few seconds of the piece and the free-form texture that ensues give the false impression that we are in for a long psychedelic jam, but the music is much more structured than that -- and carefully so. Inside the booklet is a graphic ...
