| | John Abercrombie Class Trip CD (2004)
Soul Of Things
$14.79 Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Mark Feldman (violin); Marc Johnson (bass); Joey Baron (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York in February 2003. Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Mark Feldman (violin); Marc Johnson's Bass Desires (double bass); Joey Baron (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studio, New York, NY. Photographer: Deborah Feingold. The John Abercrombie Quartet's Cat 'n' Mouse, issued in 2002, showcased a band that was on the verge of something that approached greatness. Abercrombie, violinist Mark Feldman, drummer Joey Baron, and bassist Marc Johnson gelled together inside the framework of the guitarist's increasingly open-ended compositions and became a unit that could articulate the most subtle of sonorities and intricate harmonic architectures. But they also ...
| | Tomasz Stanko Suspended Night CD (2004)
Soul Of Things
$14.59 Tomasz Stanko Quartet: Tomasz Stanko (trumpet); Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Tomasz Stanko: Tomasz Stanko; Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz, Michal Miskiewicz. Personnel: Tomasz Stanko (trumpet); Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (07/2003). Photographer: Andrzej Tyszko. When Tomasz Stanko first started working with a trio of Polish teenagers in 1994 -- Marcin Wasilewski, piano; Slawomir Kurkiewicz, bass; Michal Miskiewicz, drums -- on film projects and live gigs inside his native land, he might have glimpsed, but surely never fully conceived of, the sound that the ...
| | Marcin Wasilewski Trio CD (2005)
Soul Of Things
$14.65 Personnel: Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Marcin Wasilewski; Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (03/2004). Photographer: Andrzej Tyszko. Jazz fans the world over have become familiar with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz because they make up three quarters of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. Working with Stanko live since 1993 when they were in their teens, they are now his studio band as well, and perform on his two recent, widely acclaimed ECM outings, The Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004). This rhythm section is a prime reason for the success of those stellar recordings. Trio marks the debut of Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz, and Miskiewicz apart from their leader. The deep, unhurried lyricism that lies at the heart of the ...
| | Tord Gustavsen Ground CD (2005)
Soul Of Things
$14.05 Tord Gustavsen Trio: Tord Gustavsen; Jarle Vespestad, Harald Johnsen. Personnel: Tord Gustavsen (piano); Harald Johnsen (double bass); Jarle Vespestad (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (01/2004). Photographer: Chris Tribble. In the proto-typical Scandinavian ECM style of modern jazz oriented music, pianist Tord Gustavsen follows the path of previous progenitors influenced by Bill Evans, forged by Keith Jarrett, and extended by the likes of Mike Nock. This is certainly late-night, nocturnal music, completely reserved and relaxing, ultra-melodic, calm, peaceful, and non-threatening. ...

| | Love Ends Suicide In The Disaster CD (2006)
Soul Of Things
$9.69 Springing from Los Angeles's seemingly bottomless well of metal upstarts, A Love Ends Suicide defy easy categorization. The band--a quintet consisting of two sets of brothers--embellish an intense emo metal-core sound with guitar pyrotechnics surprisingly reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen. In perhaps a nod to the band's hopeful moniker, the guitars--attributed to Oscar Cairoli and Matt Garcia--add a ray of classic metal glory to an otherwise somber affair. The tracks on the band's debut, IN THE DISASTER, also offer another surprise: the occasional hummable chorus. Two singers--John Cairoli and bass player Emir Abdo--switch off between the former's yelps and growls and the latter's melodic refrains, most notably on the disc's third track "Of Day Dream and Fantasy." The one-two punch keeps the underground intensity at the forefront while offering an olive branch to the MTV crowd. Whenever a trend becomes hot -- -be it disco, gangsta rap, emo, rap-metal, teen pop or reggaetón -- there will inevitably be saturation. Screamo (also known as post-hardcore or melodic hardcore) was hot in the early to mid-2000s; it wasn't the mainstream phenomenon ...
