Handel: Flute Sonatas
$9.79 Feisty re-imaginings of beloved songs from the pop, folk, and classical canon make violinist David Garrett's self-titled album an unpredictable and joyous listen. Garrett--a former student of Itzhak Perlman--has remarkable control over his tone, guiding his violin to sound tremblingly sweet ("Nothing Else Matters"), bluesy and soulful ("Ain't No Sunshine"), jaunty ("Zorba's Dance"), and even aggressive and artfully harsh ("Thunderstruck"), a versatility that allows him to cover Metallica and traditional Hungarian folk dances with equal aplomb.

| | Memoirs Of A Geisha CD (2005) Original Soundtrack
Handel: Flute Sonatas
$12.09 For the soundtrack to 2005's MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, Hollywood composer John Williams unveils one of his most inventive scores. The film, based on Arthur Golden's bestselling novel about a poor girl who becomes a refined geisha in World War II-era Japan, is enhanced by Williams's emotive (and often melancholy) music, which deftly blends orchestral works with passages that feature traditional Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi and the koto. Remarkably, this mix of western and eastern sounds never comes across as forced, thanks to both Williams's bold musical vision and the outstanding solo contributions of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. The opening track, "Sayuri's Theme," is a hauntingly beautiful piece, while "The Fire Scene and the Coming of War" evokes an appropriately ominous tone. What is perhaps most striking about GEISHA's score, however, is the use of quiet, reflective moments and pure silence, with Williams effectively adhering to the old adage of "less is more."

| | James Galway Christmas Carol CD (1986)
Handel: Flute Sonatas
$8.49 James Galway's Christmas Carol is a richly varied collection of traditional, classical, and Irish carols, all delivered with grace and style. Although Galway never takes risks, it's for the best, because this music sounds best when it's delivered straight. That's the case here -- there may be no surprises on Christmas Carol, but it delivers exactly what his fans want from a Galway holiday album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

$12.79 When Martha Tilton sang with Benny Goodman she was initially billed as the Sweetheart of Swing before becoming better known affectionately as The Liltin Miss Tilton. Goodman kept Tilton busy and between October 1937 and the summer of 1939 Goodman placed in excess of thirty recordings on the American Top 20 of which Tilton's vocals featured on 27 tracks including two chart-toppers. To crown it all, Martha performed with the band in the historically triumphant Carnegie Hall concert in January 1938 that inspired the 1955 Hollywood bio-pic Benny Goodman Story. $24.95 Music has an amazing power to heal. It's something Andr‚'s fans have brought home to him time and time again. It can lift our spirits when we're sad or lonely, when we're leaving something so precious to us behind (remember the scene in The Sound of Music when Captain Von Trapp mesmerises his family with his rendition of Edelweiss?) or, indeed, when we're helpless at the loss of a dear one and no amount of physical comfort will do. It's then that the spiritual power of music comes to the fore. Thus came about the idea for this CD, built, largely, from music that Andr‚'s fans have told him time again have helped mend and repair, comfort and guide.
