| | Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Body And Soul CD Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Discography of CDs
There was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the world's most revered Sufi devotional singer, and then there was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, International Pop Sensation. Real World Records was responsible for the second incarnation, and this, his final release for the label, is a fitting tribute to the charismatic artist.
Recorded in Pakistan shortly before his 1997 death, BODY AND SOUL was mastered at Real World's British studios and released in 2002. The vibrant production bursts with joy and color, making the most of a simple ensemble: harmonium, tablas, Khan's rock star intensity, and his feisty backing chorus or "party." The songs include one traditional Qawaali hymn and three modern poems set to music, exploring secular love as a metaphor for the mystical relationship between God and man.

Body And Soul
$10.59 In a different world, Kelly Willis would be a huge country star. Blessed with an emotional, pure voice, songwriting talent and good looks, she's the whole package and then some. But she didn't quite fit in with the Nashville scene, so she's based in Texas, where she's been dubbed "The Voice of Austin." Her previous albums only hinted at the full scope of Willis' artistic vision, but her fourth full-length release WHAT I DESERVE is the first one on which it truly shines through.
Willis wrote or co-wrote half the tracks on the album, but she's also chosen material by her husband Bruce Robison, Nick Drake, Paul Kelly and even the Replacements' Paul Westerberg. It's her unmistakable voice which ties it all together, whether she's crooning her way through the dreamy "Not Long for This World" and "Time Has Told Me," getting bluesy on "Got A Feelin' For Ya" or tackling upbeat numbers like "Take Me Down." Highlights include the title track and great versions of Westerberg's "They're Blind" and Robison's "Wrapped." Listeners who find mainstream country music too slick and ...
| | Ken Vandermark Single Piece Flow CD (1997)
Body And Soul
$10.75 This, the first recording by the Vandermark 5, created a template for the next several releases by the band: relatively concise compositions alternating up-tempo burners with contemplative numbers, hewing to a post-Ornette Coleman approach that touched on free improv while essentially remaining fairly straightforward. Vandermark, who wrote all the compositions, is often at his best penning themes with surging, motoric riffs that, oddly enough, recall some of the driving pieces of early King Crimson. These songs, like the conclusion of "Careen" (dedicated to Jackie Chan!), have an irresistible momentum and are very solidly nailed together, providing a wonderful substructure for all manner of improvisation on top. The musicians are all up to the task, though it's Jeb Bishop (on trombone, especially) and Kent Kessler who are the real standouts, each adding that little extra bit of nuance and imagination to make the best numbers take off. But the "stars" of the album are the compositions themselves, probing and muscular, offering a fresh way through the stasis that was building ...
| | Sleater-Kinney Hot Rock CD (1999)
Body And Soul
$13.49 With 1997's DIG ME OUT, Sleater-Kinney were about as mainstream-popular as decidedly dissonant indie-rock girls could be. As the archetypal riot-grrrl collective, the trio found themselves emblazoned on the cover of all the requisite magazines and in practically every fashionable up-and-comer's list. Which begged the eternal ...
