With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all bring their knowledge of great art and fine cuisine to bear each time they play together--it's a multi-faceted, heady brew. Holland's compositions are angular but never dissonant, polished but also earthy. The illusion is that these tunes flow effortlessly from this smart ensemble. The truth is that this is one of the best groups in early 21st-century jazz, based on a refined collective sensibility that is savvy and rare.

The world of modern jazz would be a very different beast if it weren't for the emergence of John Zorn in the 1970s. Unafraid to incorporate a diverse range of styles into his music, Zorn had drawn on heavy metal, punk, classical, and a number of other influences to help drag the genre away from its traditional leanings. Masada are one of his many groups, with a line up completed by Greg Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Joey Baron. This show features Zorn and Masada performing in their native New York City, at a regular haunt for the band, Tonic, on the Lower East Side. The concert was filmed in the summer of 1999, and sees the band performing with their usual enthusiasm, excitement, and ambition to push the boundaries of music back further than many of their contemporaries.

Joined by pianist Joey Calderazzo, Jeff "Tain" watts on drums, and Eric Revis on bass, Amsterdam's Bimhuis Jazz Club is lit up by the sounds emitting from the performers on stage. Also included are interviews with Marsalis and his band, as well as a fascinating filmed conversation between the talented saxophonist and Alice Coltrane.
Filmed at Amsterdam's legendary Bimhuis Jazz Club, the DVD features John Colrane's immortal "A Love Supreme brilliant interpreted by Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Eric Revis and Jeff "Tain" Watts. On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for instance," have Monk adding rhythmic, dissonant punctuation to Coltrane's torrential stream of ideas, creating a thrilling push-pull balance. A superb date, and a must for fans of both artists, AT CARNEGIE HALL captures two of jazz's most important figures working in perfect symbiosis.
