Fans who buy this Johnny Frigo CD expecting to hear some hot swing violin will be surprised. Frigo spent most of his career (until the mid-'80s) as a studio bassist in Chicago who played jazz now and then. In the early '70s, a dance teacher persuaded Frigo to record some danceable jazz for his students to learn by. The result was 14 groove tunes that are an R&B-ish and funky brand of jazz. Frigo is on bass throughout, keeping the rhythms going for a septet of local musicians that includes his son, Rick Frigo, on drums and pianist/organist Dick Marx. Along with some funky originals are such unexpected tunes as Buddy Miles' "Do Whatever Sets You Free," Isaac Hayes' "Walk From Regios," and a lengthy version of "Them Changes." The music is enjoyable enough; just do not expect it to be swing standards. ~ Scott Yanow

Compiled in the wake of Otis Redding's premature death, THE DOCK OF THE BAY is a suitable testimony to a gigantic performer. The melancholic title track suggested a new musical blueprint, and elements of the previously unissued "Open The Door" show a similarly muted perspective. Tracks culled from OTIS BLUE and THE SOUL ALBUM sit beside the playful "Tramp," which represents the singer's brief partnership with Carla Thomas. The remaining material is drawn from various sources, including flip-sides and compilations and, taken as a whole, the album provides a precis of Redding's past, as well as intimating what was so sadly lost.
Recorded between 1965 & 1968.

Mongo Santamaria leads a potent octet over two nights at Birdland in this live CD taped in 1992. The conga master is joined by trumpeter/flugelhornist Eddie Allen (who serves as music director as well), tenor saxophonist/flautist Craig Rivers, and alto saxophonist/baritone saxophonist/flautists Jimmy Cozier, with pianist Ricardo Gonzalez leading the rhythm section. Among Santamaria's seven originals, the peppy "Brazilian Sunset" especially stands out, along with two pieces by Marty Sheller, his former musical director.
