The Frustrators, who include Mike Dirnt of Green Day, upset the all too palatable genre of punk-pop with Achtung Jackass, an enjoyable combination of new wave and bratty, goofball punk. It's no London Calling, but eclectic in its own way. Achtung Jackass skips from mid-tempo punk rock ("Hide and Seek") to Descendents-style jokers ("Frustrators Jingle") and even throws in a little Black Flag for good measure (."25"). But it is a cover of the Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl" that really sets the tone for the record, and the band's ability to earnestly incorporate the diverse catchiness of new wave that makes it so true blue. ~ Charles Spano

Achtung Jackass
$17.39 A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with the summer smash that never was, June, 1978's, "Emergency," and it is with these tracks as its benchmarks that 999 should be judged. A ferocious live band, the group harnessed every iota of their stage performance for the studio, turning in an album that zips past at the speed of light, in a blur of chant-worthy choruses and pogo-able riffs; even better, three bonus tracks round up the absent "Nasty Nasty" 45, plus a ...

| | Lamb Of God - Killadelphia DVD (2005)
Achtung Jackass
$9.69 Metal band Lamb of God may hail from Richmond, Virginia, but their dark brand of melodic thrash pits them squarely in the midst of the European (and mostly Scandinavian) death-metal tradition. KILLADELPHIA captures the band performing live at Philadelphia's Trocadero in October 2004 for 15 tracks of pure metal fury (including six from their major-label debut ASHES OF THE WAKE) as well as behind-the-scenes footage from their world tour. Songs ...
| | Dimebag Darrell - Dimevision 1: That's The Fun I Have DVD (2006)

$13.05 This retrospective look at the career of former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell is a welcome addition to the canon of material that the celebrated star left behind. Featuring archival footage of the young Darrell in action, as well as scenes from the heady days of Pantera's enormous success, DIVISION is a comprehensive overview of a much-missed figure in the heavy ...
| | Ministry Rio Grande Blood CD (2007) Digipak
Achtung Jackass
$10.69 Another salvo in Ministry's unrelenting aural assault on the policies of George W. Bush, 2007's RIO GRANDE DUB, as the title implies, presents spacious dub versions of the searing industrial-metal songs from RIO GRANDE BLOOD. Remixed by John Bechdel and Clayton Worbeck, these tracks often prove to be more dynamic than the originals, as revealed on the echo-laden, sample-heavy, and aggressive Rio Grande Dubya mix of the original album's title song.
After the fierce, politically charged HOUSES OF THE MOLE and its companion piece, RANTOLOGY, Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen launches another anti-George W. Bush sonic invective with RIO GRANDE BLOOD. Amazingly, this 2006 outing manages to be even more scathing than the aforementioned releases, due to yet another round of strategically ...
| | Riot Restless Breed CD (1982) Reissue
Achtung Jackass
$9.69 Riot bandleader/guitarist Mark Reale's frequent lineup shifts finally caught up with him on 1982's Restless Breed. Longtime vocalist Guy Speranza's exit after the group's seminal release, Fire Down Under, wasn't just another member change. Replacement Rhett Forrester demonstrates nice range and intensity on Restless Breed, but Speranza's performance and writing abilities are sorely missed. While Riot always suffered from a faceless quality, with Speranza, they managed to somehow stay ahead of their time. The New York outfit was one of the first American metal acts to adopt a melodic, speedy approach that approximated thrash and the about-to-crest New Wave of British Heavy Metal many years before each would emerge from the underground. Times finally caught up with Reale and company on Restless Breed. Forrester isn't exactly mimicking David Coverdale on "When We Were ...

Achtung Jackass
$14.29 Los Angeles, California; House Of Blues, Anaheim, California; 4th And B, San Diego, California in 2003.
In 2003, more than two decades after disbanding, the original Joe Jackson Band reunited for a new album and tour, to longtime fans' unending delight. The reggae-influenced, bass-driven band did much to popularize "new wave" in the late 1970s, and after 20-plus years of Jackson dabbling with everything from jump blues to neo-classical orchestrations, the vibrant rock energy of Gary Sanford, Graham Maby, and Dave Houghton is a breath of fresh air. The band puts as much into the songs from the new album as it does into the classics, but unsurprisingly it's those late-'70s rockers that elicit the most emphatic audience response. To hear these hardy rock & roll vets lay into the breathless, punky "Got the Time" or the Kinks-meet-ska archness of "Sunday Papers" with the vigor of young men is to believe in rock as the fountain of youth.
