| | Ned Otter So Little Time CD Ned Otter Discography of CDs
Veteran tenor saxophonist/composer Ned Otter presents the jazz public with his debut as a leader on this 2002 effort, featuring his mentor, tenor saxophone great George Coleman. Moreover, Otter devotes this outing to drummer Billy Higgins, who passed away shortly after the final production stages of this recording were consummated. Simply put, this sextet hearkens notions of the now infamous '60s Blue Note recordings era as the band sports a radiant sound to coincide with its jubilant demeanor. Otter, Coleman, trumpeter Tom Kirkpatrick, and the sadly under-recognized pianist Harold Mabern frequently trade sprightly fours while reworking melodies amid a plethora of hard driving swing vamps. Otter's broad, robust tones and melodic gifts often complement Coleman's equally muscular and altogether fluent attack. And while some of these pieces are more memorable than others, Otter and his musical associates go for the proverbial jugular on more than one occasion. They also augment their game plan with tightly organized unison choruses amid a collective flair for the dynamic. ~ Glenn Astarita

So Little Time album
$13.45 John Hicks' fourth CD in a series honoring pianists and composers who were from the greater Pittsburgh area salutes Sonny Clark, whose contributions have been somewhat overlooked since his premature death in 1963. Joined by bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Cecil Brooks III, Hicks adds several originals -- which complement but don't attempt to mimic Clark's style -- in addition to his interpretations of Clark's compositions. He adds a lovely introductory original solo piano prelude to precede the easygoing waltz treatment of Clark's "My Conception," while his take of "Cable Car" gives it a Latin flavor. Hicks ...
| | Ned Otter Powder Keg CD (2004)
So Little Time CD music
$12.89 Tenor saxophonist and composer Ned Otter is an old-fashioned player in all the best senses of the term. Though a technical master of his horn, he impresses you with his chops without letting them distract you from the music; though well-versed in several generations of styles, he doesn't drag you along on an exhausting journey through jazz history in order to demonstrate his musical erudition. He has a skill set that is rare in jazz musicians: a combination of top-notch technique and exquisite melodic taste. (Having sidemen of the caliber of Billy Higgins and Harold Mabern, not to mention the fine bassist Dennis Irwin, doesn't hurt either, of course.) ...
| | Brian Lynch Meets Bill Charlap CD (2004)
So Little Time music CDs
$13.49 The chemistry between Brian Lynch and Bill Charlap should come as no surprise to anyone who has heard their work together as members of the Phil Woods Quintet. This 2003 session features the trumpeter and the pianist with bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The opener is a very refreshing arrangement of the frequently recorded standard "On Green Dolphin Street"; the 7/4 time signature and Charlap's unusual vamp help it to stand out, with Lynch's muted trumpet leading the way. The leader switches to flügelhorn for a lush treatment of "Autumn Nocturne." The disguised introduction ...

| | Marvin Gaye Complete Duets CDs (2001)
So Little Time music CDs
$20.89 Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios East).
Most listeners will be satisfied enough with a best-of compilation to cover the work that Gaye and Terrell did together. Those who want to hear more should make The Complete Duets their next and only subsequent stop. The two-CD collection includes everything from their three Motown duet albums, along with the previously unreleased "We'll Be Satisfied," an alternate take of "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," and an alternate vocal of "Keep on Lovin' Me Honey." For good measure, the second half of disc two is devoted to rare solo Terrell sides. That includes four songs from 1965-1966 singles, including the non-LP B-side "Baby Don'tcha Worry," all of which were also released as duets ...

| | Mt Hood Jazz Band I'm Still Here CD (2007)
So Little Time CD music
$13.25 Most college stage bands feature enthusiastic ensembles and weak soloists. That is to be expected because, although the students have been well trained in reading music and playing together as sections, it takes time to develop one's own voice as an improviser. However the Mt. Hood Jazz Band is a different case altogether. On I'm Still Here, they not only sound like a professional jazz orchestra in their ensembles, but they feature consistently creative and inventive solos. Certainly no one listening to altoist Max Bryk solo on John Coltrane's "Grand Central" is going to think of him as a mere student. And while three pros (trombonist Stan Bock, trumpeter Thara Memory, and Nancy King who sings "I've Got You Under My Skin") are heard one time apiece, their presence, while welcome, was not needed to make ...
