| | Rolling Stones Still Life (American Concert 1981) CD (1982) Reissue; Remastered
Magada Compilation No 1
$7.96 By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor stadiums and vast arenas.
Although it lacks the youthful and unpredictable energy of their earlier concert albums (namely 1970's GET YER YA YA'S OUT), STILL LIFE showed that the Stones still had plenty of gas left in their tank 20 years down the road. Highlights include a cover of the Miracles' "Going to a Go Go" (an early MTV favorite), such '60s classics as "Under My Thumb," "Time is on My Side," and "Satisfaction," plus the '70s nugget "Shattered." Surprisingly, no selections from the album they were touring behind at the time, TATTOO YOU, are included.

| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere CD (1974) Remastered
Magada Compilation No 1
$8.15 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.
Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted contrast to the mulit-textured, typically sophisticated arrangements. For every "Son of Orange County" (an ambitious, difficult piece) there's a "Cheepnis" ...

| | Teenage Fanclub Howdy CD (2000) (Import) Japan
Magada Compilation No 1
$40.75 Despite debuting in the early '90s with a grunged-up, dirty sound, Scotland's Teenage Fanclub eventually settled into a pastoral, power pop paradise that continues on their sixth album, HOWDY. Blending their by-now-familiar mix of blissed-out, Byrdsian country-pop and dense, sunny Beach Boys melodies, HOWDY sets the groundwork early with the chiming chorus of "I Need Direction," a blissed out slice of sun-dappled pop.
The album continues in this no-worries vein on such three-part harmony confections as "Accidental Life," "Dumb Dumb Dumb," and "My Uptight Life," which, despite their seemingly bummer titles, are gently strummed odes to hope, inspiration, and learning from mistakes. ...

Magada Compilation No 1
$11.79 This marked the transition from a nifty country rock band to a rock combo with the potential for world domination. The music was a tad sweeter and less ironic, a morsel rockier with Top 40 friendliness. Tracks such as 'Take It To The Limit' and 'Lyin' Eyes' have been played far too much on the radio. They need to be rested in place of Bernie Leadon's unusual instrumental, 'Journey Of The Sorcerer' (used as the theme to BBC Television's Hitchhiker's ...
