Herman Chittison was one of the top jazz pianists to emerge during the 1930s, but since he spent some of his most important years in Europe and generally recorded for obscure labels, he never achieved much recognition. These previously unreleased piano solos from two separate occasions were made available for the first time on this collector's CD, with the second half of the set dating from just two months before the pianist passed away. Overall Chittison sounds fine, relatively modern in spots without losing his melodic style. There are some weak show tunes from the era (such as "Getting to Know You," "The Sound of Music," and "People"), but in general Chittison overcomes the material and comes up with some inventive solos. ~ Scott Yanow
