By 1950, drummer Ben Pollack was regularly playing Dixieland in the Los Angeles area. His Pick-A-Rib Boys recorded 20 selections as radio transcriptions (all included on this CD), and these brief performances (none longer than two minutes and 40 seconds) pack a lot of music into a short period of time. Trumpeter Dick Cathcart, trombonist Moe Schneider, clarinetist Matty Matlock, pianist Ray Sherman, bassist Walt Yoder, and Pollack himself romp through a variety of Dixieland standards, tunes from the 1920s, and a few oddball items, including "San Antonio Shout," "The Third Man Theme," and Matlock's "Echo in the Cavern." ~ Scott Yanow
recorded in April & May 1950, in the finest tradition of "Chicago-style" jazz, 21 tracks

Ben Pollack And His Pick-A-Rib Boys album
$15.95 Musically, the album finds Dylan once again mining the stately traditionalist sound first heard on LOVE AND THEFT. Lazy blues numbers, piano-based songbook pop, and jumpin' country swing provide the backdrop for Dylan's continuing study of the vicissitudes of life, love, and death. Although he is certainly world-weary, a lot of life is lived in the verses of these songs and there is a dogged spirituality that provides, if not hope (a rather prosaic notion for Dylan by this point, to be sure), at least a means to finding ...
| | Bob Crosby Complete Bob Cats, Vol. 1: In The Beginning CD (2008) (Import)
Ben Pollack And His Pick-A-Rib Boys CD music
$13.75 Bob Crosby's best and most enjoyable working ensemble was a scaled-down version of his big band. Strongly steeped in traditional jazz and well-stocked with excellent improvisers, they were known to the world as the Bob Cats. Although other reissue labels have tried, Sounds of Yesteryear might have topped them all in 2008 by releasing the complete recordings of this solid little group in three installments. Vol. 1 hunkers down and concentrates upon sessions that took place between November 1937 and June 1939, which was an exceptionally good period for the Bob Cats. Crosby ...
| | James Moody Heritage Hum/The Teachers CD (1996)
Ben Pollack And His Pick-A-Rib Boys music CDs
$11.59 James Moody's formidable saxophone and flute are heard here in the service of some very credible performances, along with some of more dubious merit. Both Heritage Hum and The Teachers were originally released in 1970, but there is a world of stylistic and artistic difference between the two.
Heritage Hum is a satisfying mainstream quartet date, with the leader joined by the solid rhythm section of bassist Sam Jones, drummer Freddie Waits, and pianist Mike Longo. Moody sticks with the flute mostly, making clear his deserved ranking as one of the finest jazz flutists. Eddie Jefferson, who wrote the lyrics for King Pleasure's 1952 hit "Moody's Mood for Love" ...

Ben Pollack And His Pick-A-Rib Boys music CDs
$8.99 A cursory listen to DISCLAIMER reveals a debt to such U.S. heavy rock bands as Papa Roach and Drowning Pool, no great shock since Seether producer Jay Baumgardner had previously worked with both of those bands. The surprising part is that this very American-sounding nu-metal band actually comes from South Africa. Their homeland is where the Dave Matthews Band comparisons abruptly end, though. Seether goes for the time-tested ...
