Anyone wanting to define the word "warble" need look no further than Marc Ruvolo's vocals on the third release from the Chicago foursome the Atari Star. And Other Smaller, Brighter Worlds shows a very mature band whose members know where they're heading and what they want to do. With pop roots in '60s and '70s music and assistance from producer Jeremy Lemos (Joan of Arc, Smog, Stereolab), the Atari Star have reached a spot heretofore unknown for the band. Listening to this, it's almost hard to believe that Ruvolo was once a member of the snotty punk band the Traitors. While much of the music is gentle, peaceful, and poppy, sometimes that almost serves as a negative, coming across as stark to the point of needing more to fill in the empty pockets. Simplicity can be good, but it has to be done just right, usually by telling a story and featuring unique vocals. Ruvolo has the vocals; he just needs to match them with lyrics of equal proportion and he'll have quite the winner. Nonetheless, the Atari Star have still served up a good pop album that serves as a nice backdrop for sunny summer afternoons. Based upon the progression of the Atari Star to this point, there would appear to be nothing but "brighter worlds" ahead for this band. ~ Kurt Morris

| | Thunderbox Concrete And Gasoline CD (2008)
And Other Smaller, Brighter Worlds songs
$7.99 Concrete and Gasoline is an all-new selection of original songs from Central PA's Thunderbox. A follow up to 2002's A Postcard From the Sun, Concrete and Gasoline's 17 tracks showcase Thunderbox's songwriting diversity- from the opening jangle of 'Incredible Girl' to the polished pop goodness of 'My Favorite Pain' to the grit and muscle of 'Drive,' Thunderbox delivers. Whether it's the world-beat of 'Turnaround' or the anthemic 'Simple Revolution,' the songs are hooky and memorable, but always compelling.CD Review from Jim Price of "Pennsylvania Musician" Magazine:THUNDERBOX - CONCRETE AND GASOLINE (no label) Thunderbox is the studio project creation of Philipsburg-based singer, songwriter and musician John Cimino. It becomes clear upon listening to the seventeen tracks of Thunderbox's second CD, Concrete and Gasoline, that Cimino possesses the gift of a knowing good song hook. Such a multitude of songs might sound cumbersome in the hands of lesser songsmiths, but Cimino's ability to craft a variety of catchy, hook-laden ear candy keeps Concrete and Gasoline captivating and fresh for the duration. The prevalent flavor is ...
| | Janna Goodwille Wishes To Wings CD (2009)
And Other Smaller, Brighter Worlds album
$14.19 Janna Goodwille's songs, with their honest lyrics, blend of alternative acoustic jazz-influenced pop, and the soulful arrangements with which she delivers them, have captivated audiences in her home country of England, UK, in parts of NE Spain and as far a field as Arizona, Nevada's Burning Man Festival, and California's west coast music scene. Commenting on Janna's music, Gerald Bryant of KECG 88.1 Jazz Beat Radio Oakland, California, says: 'It's very different. It's not the type of jazz music or top 40 or mainstream music that you find, and yet it is really what people are looking and listening for. They're listening for sound that communicates right at the heart. Communication matters don't exist at a vocal level or a spoken level, they exist at the heart and everything Janna's talking about, all of the tones that she brings out, exist right at the heart. 'Janna's self-penned material brings us the voice of a view of the world from a humanitarian perspective. She says, 'So few people have the courage to take responsibility for creating their own reality, and I think it's a key. I trust that my music will not only provoke thought but will also inspire personal and collective growth, positivity and action." Janna began playing piano and dreaming of being a singer/songwriter/performer at the age of five. In her teens she took up the flute and started listening to soul, jazz, pop and classical music. Until her early 20s, Janna sang and toured with several choirs, landed roles in musical theatre productions, and sang with jazz orchestras in Manchester and London. She says, 'At this point I began to understand from a performers' perspective what so many thousands before me have long realized: music really affects people! Music does something that we can't see or hear, something extraordinary, magical, and exciting!' This is when Janna realized she wanted to make her dreams a reality. So... she studied pop music, began teaching singing and music to individuals and classes and co-founded, co-managed and sang in a 10-piece funk, soul & disco band. But still she wanted more!In 2003, Janna met and started working with producer/manager Janine Blakeburn. 'It was Janine's trust and confidence ...
