| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Whatever Gets You Through The Day
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut Spirit was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K. but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic ...

| | Scritti Politti Songs To Remember CD (1982) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Whatever Gets You Through The Day
$7.59 Re-released debut album from DIY aesthetes initially released on the legendary U.K. label, Rough Trade; includes popular club hit's "Sex" and "Sweetest Girl." U.K. import. On its 1982 full-length debut, SONGS TO REMEMBER, Scritti Politti made a significant about-face from its late-'70s anarcho post-punk roots, offering up a set of bright pop tunes strongly informed by gospel, R&B, and reggae. (In many ways, this paralleled Paul Weller's move from the Jam to the Style Council.) Led by plaintive-voiced frontman Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer), the Welsh ensemble offers up forays into blue-eyed-soul (the smooth, sax-laden "A Slow Soul," the simmering "Faithless"), funk (the restless, bass-heavy "Sex"), and dub-tinged pop (the lilting club hit "The Sweetest Girl"), easing the curveball nature of the album slightly with the angular, quirky "Jacques Derrida." While Scritti Politti would find even more success and acclaim with their next record, CUPID & PSYCHE 85, SONGS TO REMEMBER is the fascinating document of an act in the midst of a huge sonic transition, and it stands out for exactly that reason. One needn't look much further than the song titles on the back of Songs to Remember to be struck with the thought that Scritti Politti had changed their scheme. Gone were the days of "Bibbly-O-Tek" and "Skank Bloc Bologna," replaced by brow-raising titles like "Gettin' Havin' and Holdin'" and, er, "Sex." Then there's the photo of Green Gartside -- he looks chipper! And at what point did his shoulders get so big? Oh, those must be shoulder pads. During a lengthy recovery process necessitated by a physical meltdown, Gartside found himself ...
| | George Harrison Brainwashed CD (2002)
Whatever Gets You Through The Day

Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, dobro, ukulele); Isabela Borzymowska (spoken vocals); Jeff Lynne (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, piano, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, bass, background vocals); Dhani Harrison (acoustic & electric guitars, Wurlitzer piano, background vocals); Jane Lister (harp); Jools Holland, Jon Lord (piano); Mike Moran, Marc Mann (keyboards); Jim Keltner (drums); Bikram Ghosh (tabla); Sam Brown (background vocals). "Marwa Blues" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "Any Road" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. George Harrison went quiet not long after the second Traveling Wilburys album, surfacing only for the Beatles' Anthology in the mid-'90s. He was recording all the while, yet he died before completing the album that would have been the follow-up to 1987's Cloud Nine. His son, Dhani, and his longtime friend/collaborator Jeff Lynne completed the recordings, released late in 2002, nearly a year after George's death, as Brainwashed. Given its baggage it's easy to be suspicious about the merits of Brainwashed prior to hearing it. Posthumous efforts often feel incomplete, ...

| | Isthmus Land Bridge CD (2008)
Whatever Gets You Through The Day
$9.35 PRESS CLIPS“Endlessly atmospheric and almost entirely continuous, it's clear that every second of the 41 minutes Land Bridge runs for, has been sweated over in an attempt to squeeze every last bit of aura from it, into making every single second as expressive as it possibly can be. … a truly brilliant example of just how atmospheric metal can be… engaging and intelligent from start to finish… 4 / 5”- RockMidets.com“The Perihelion suite, showcasing the band’s technical prowess while the exhibiting dynamic control of melody and feel, is worthy of its own EP. No, I don’t know why the band has three songs about early January and the location of the Earth in its orbit around the Sun. But all of the songs are fantastic and the ambient pieces break up the depth of ideas into more easily digestible packets of intense riffing... I can’t stop listening to Land Bridge. There is one glaring problem with this disc, though: it’s too short, even at 41 minutes. Fortunately, the sheer amount of ideas enable vast re-listens. 10/10”- BeatBots.com“Placed early in the album, the “Perihelion” saga showcases the best of Isthmus’s talents early on, with fantastic arpeggios and technical riffs from the guitarists coming hard and fast at every turn. While part II slows down the trilogy slightly with the guitars slowing down to let the almost robotic screamed vocals have a chance to keep up, the two instrumentals do fantastic in keeping a fast exhilarating pace, something unusual for this kind of genre… it is this constant contrast between typical Post-metal atmosphere and style with the technical and exciting playing of the band that makes this album so fascinating... In “Land Bridge”, Isthmus have created one of the most technical and atmospheric Post-metal albums of the year, this is an album that almost feels ahead of it’s time, like a brief glimpse into what the future of Post-metal could be… 4.5 / 5”- Metal-Observer.com and SputnikMusic.com"Their talent and the unique sound is showcased cohesively throughout the album. Watch out for the title track, the most doom and epic of all on this album... some serious headbangable and mathy guitar riffing... it just boggles my mind every time I play this... lyrics about nature... serious psychedelic noises, and the top quality production help make this one of this year's best surprises. ...
